Right its got as slow as hell since friday , nothing wrong with the pc or settings , but it gets halfway through loading a page and stops , i cant download music as it just stops and wont continue , ive got pipex solo 1000 (1 meg BB) if i hover the pointer over the talking computers it says im connected at 2.2mbps , ive checked my connection on adsl guide and this is what it says

Direction Actual Speed True Speed(estimated)
Downstream 82 Kbps (10.3 KB/sec) 88 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 29 Kbps (3.6 KB/sec) 31 Kbps (inc. overheads)

can anybody make any sense of it ? and what the possible fault is ? bt reckon the line is fine ??

I've just tested my 1meg Virgin BB using ADSL Guide.

Downstream
Actual Speed 949 Kbps (118.6 KB/sec)
True Speed (estimated) 1024 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream
Actual Speed 243 Kbps (30.4 KB/sec)
True Speed (estimated) 262 Kbps (inc. overheads)

Are you using a USB modem? If yes do you have any other USB peripherals?

Have you installed any new software in the last few days?

Sounds very similar to what happened to me !

BT are going through a process of regrading all ADSL enabled lines to the maximum supported speed, currently 2Meg.
The problem is they are not too clever at actually testing the line to see if it can actually support that speed!
If you are too far from the exchange or have a poor quality line, you will find that due to the signal to noise ratio and dB loss in the line you will suffer very poor speeds and many disconnections.

Even if you are only paying for a 1Meg service, the line is still 2Meg enabled but throttled back to 1Meg by the ISP in this case Pipex.

BT will state that there is no problem with the line but be persistent with Pipex customer service and hopefully they will force BT to regrade the line back to 1Meg.

If you have a router, look at the statistics for the connection and it (hopefully) give you the dB figure for download & upload.
IIRC a connection with a Download figure greater than 49dB will not support 2Meg.

Right im running on the interweb spacesaver dialup been on the bt broadband test page at http://speedtest.bt.com

results are for my 1meg bradband are....

The speed test has completed on test server speedtester1.nat.bt.com for user 01308862*** and you have downloaded a 1.7Mb file at a speed of

31 kilo bits per second (Kbps), your service bandwidth will have been quoted to you in kilo bits per second.

Your IP address is ************, your browser is reported as being Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 and is running on Windows XP.

BT would regard the speed ranges shown below as normal service:

For 250kbps End Users speeds between 50 - 250kbps.
For 500kbps End Users speeds between 100 - 500kbps.
For 1000kbps End Users speeds between 200 - 1000kbps.
For 2000kbps End Users speeds between 400 - 2000kbps.

You may now disconnect from the speed test account (click 'disconnect' in your internet connection window) and if you wish to regain normal access to the internet please re-connect to your ISP using your usual username and password.

Please note that test results may vary according to varying traffic in the network. If you continue to experience slower throughput when logged in to your ISP, this may be due to a slow internet site or high traffic levels beyond the BT Wholesale Network. Please report this situation to your ISP's helpdesk.
