My computer misbehaved so can only now rant.

At the moment on ch4 that Michael Vaughn received the just accolades for winning "The Ashes" I flicked to BBC1. Waffle re impending fuel strike. Went onto ITV. Waffle re icy roads in winter.

I am sorry, but sporting wise we have little opportunity to cheer in this country. Yet when our national team achieves a really phenominal accomplishment, it is treated with almost indifference by the main channels.

I really do find it hard to comprehend why our overpaid non achieving footballers receive all the attention, when our successful sportspeople get just a side mention.

Well, a big congrats to all the England cricket team from me, and the Aussies for making it so entertaining.

Um - because Channel 4 had the contract to cover it maybe?

It was on the ITV news 15 mins later (pictures courtesy Channel 4...)

To use the word 'disgrace' is a slight over exageration don't you think?

Did you expect every channel in the country to suddenly stop what they're doing and go straight to the cricket just because we won the ashes?

No, just to acknowledge it, as would have been the case had our football team done something of merit. But I guess we'll never know.

Channel 4 paid a lot of money for the rights to it, of course no one else was going to cover it live.

Congratulations to the England team on winning back the Ashes! I think the media problem will sort itself out and hopefully more people will go and watch cricket.

I think the real disgrace is that from next year all test matches will only be on Sky Sports.
Over the duration of this Ashes series hundreds of people have sat up and taken notice but how many casual viewers are going to follow the sport if it mean subscribing to a premium channel?
In signing with Sky I think the TCCB have done long-term harm to cricket in the UK.

It doesnt get the same coverage as football, for the simple reason it is not as popular as football, and is boring as hell imo.

Football is our national sport, Cricket is far from it.

Fuel prices, and the condition of the roads in winter, are things that have a real impact on us all. Football, crocket etc are just things people do for fun, yes it's nice when the home team does well but really makes s*d all difference to anybody.

Sorry Peter i disagree,if we got the kids involved in sport at a young age we might have a chance of keeping the of the streets and drugs etc. As it stands at present we have little facilites for kids to try sport so they have little else to do with their time.

There has been cricket coverage on just about every news broadcast for the last month or so, regardless of channel. No doubt there will be extensive coverage on both ITV's and BBC's News at Ten programs tonight.

I really don't know what you expected.

Aside from teh fact that Liverpool had proved themselves the best team in Eurpoe (ok, not really but you know what I mean) over a 9 month or so competition, and England beat one country's team over a few weeks...

Well done England anyway (especially to Flintoff, Preston lad!)

I dont know what time we won specifically, but to say there was no news coverage is cobblers, all the news programmes from late afternoon/early evening on all channels had it as the lead story, I was amazed it knocked the Irish troubles into 2nd place. Channel Five had it as the lead at 5pm, the ITV main news comes on at 5.30pm and again it was the lead, I then switched to BBC1 at 6pm and it was the lead, then channel 4 at 7pm and it was the lead.

I dont know what channels you lot are watching, but to say it hasnt been covered much is very wide of the mark. Or perhaps you are just complaining because it wasnt an 'all channel' news flash at the exact moment it was clear we had won?

Or football, but the media seems to think otherwise about the game with the pig's bladder...

In response to the earlier comment though, there was plenty of coverage on all channels of the cricket, plus Beeb 1 will be covering some live open top bus parade thingy tomorrow morning - just about the only cricket coverage on BBC TV for about 5 years.
