I'm interested to see just how many and what kinds of Jap car V8 projects are happening over there.

The more insane the better!!

Not sure. The japs nutter jobs tend to do fine with their 4 pots, and 3 isgh litre twins... Not sure a V8 would be a better engine... more reliable, maybe, but not in the spirit of Jappyness.

V8 in a miata is good though!
Can't see a Skyline, 300 sx, Supra, etc, being better with a big yank V8.
Charade, swift, and a corolla might do with a V8 though!

The V8's in the MX5,Miata,Eunos thing is so cool,is a very good *match* -& blows the MX5 image outa the water.
Interesting point(s) AM. Taking the skyline (surprise surprise ) because of it's vast(ish) size/weight have often wondered why Nissan never just added another litre or two, & a supercharger,& a..,& a...,& a... ad infinitum,you get the picture would'ha been perfect IMHO.

well there is an R32 skyline running in a fairly open-ended race series down here with a decent sized V8 in it....not sure of details but I think its a holden(aka chev) motor, 5.7 or a 6.0 running decent sorta power.


mind you, theres a few other interesting conversions floating round too..the other day I saw an E36 BMW 3-series touring car sitting in a workshop......with an RB26(big single turbo) sitting under the bonnet and some pretty serious looking slicks on it. gotta be reasonably quick....

My son-in-law's company builds and sells cutting edge LS engine packages, ECUs, wiring harnesses to "stand alone" in any car. We regularly see 500 HP to 850 HP LS engine packages. He's currently working to develop an LS2 based, normally aspirated engine in the 700 HP range and already has a running prototype. The GM LS Gen III and Gen IV engines hold alot of further development promise. Old Corvette and GTOs were just the start.

SERIOUSLY looking at a winter project for some proper ponies under the drifters bonnet. If there is a package out there for a Miata/MX5 I wanna know........

Holy feck I've just read your "I've just been out in it post" & thats it I'm doing one too

I'm thinking LS6 stock standard tune, with a few necessary mods to make it run.

Am I right in saying apart from the subframe & the rear driveline most of it is straight forward?

Thanks for your questions guys, sorry my relpies are slow because I travel quite a bit.

The website is Howard-Performance.com however it's not up yet, another week or two.

Actually the conversion looks easy, because of engine fit, but is difficult to do it right. The only LS V8 trans combo that fits is the T-56 six speed and it still must use F-body Clutch master and requires extensive sheet metal mods to firewall and tunnel. It does come up in the stock Miata shifter location. The uni-body frame rails require adding steel subframe reinforcement and through bolt backing in the interior floor pans. Fuel tank needs Walbro HP pump, Corvette fuel filter/regulator up sized fuel lines. 8.8 Ford IRS rear-end,from Thunderbird or Cobra, Mark Williams, custom length axles,design / weld new mounts, rebroached hubs. Custom built headers and dual exhaust. Stand alone computer ECU & harness, all new Autometer guages and senders.

The "Bottom Line" is you use the Miata sheet metal body, k-member and rear end subframes and basic wiring & lighting looms, everything else is either GM, Ford or custom built. This is just a brief, general overview. My current running costs, doing everything myself, is at about $ 20,000.00 US including the $ 4,000.00 US I paid originally for the stock Miata and I'm not completely finished yet.

Sorry for the extremely long post, however it's important, I don't want anybody to wrongly think that a LS V8 conversion is an easy, cheap alternative, it's not!!

On Miata.net you probably read my friend Tim's posts under: "Turbotacoma". Mine's not done yet, but there are about 10 of us regularly communicating about our LS V8 Miatas projects, but I don't personally know of anybody using a "Kit" or Package although a company in California claims to have one for sale.

Nobody over here, I've seen YET is drifting in a Miata, because it's too damn hard to do!!!!!!!

And I attend just about every event here in Arizona, going to Pro AutoSports event tommorow.

I guess alot of guys don't know what I'm talking about when I refer to a Miata, since I've recently been informed in the UK and Europe the little Mazda is refered to as an MX-5.

Sorry for any confusion!

Maybe we are! I did know someone who was convinced a Eunos was a 'European' specced MX5.

Weren't eunos' an experiment in rebranding? A bit like Toyota and lexus, Nissan and Infiniti?? I know the Eunos was the Jap mx5, but the Eunos came in all sorts of mazda cars. MX3, MX6, etc... I don't think it lasted that long.

I thought eunos was some after OEM upfitter in Japan doing sport packages, suspension, etc. to MX-5s Like Saleen does to Mustangs here in US.

TTE in cologne did a IS430...

Lexus IS200 with the 4.3 V8 from the LS - oh, and then they supercharged it!

I'll see if i can dig up the performance figures from somewhere...
