re my 280i
car ran fine then I found that I could not put it in reverse because transmission would not stop spinning. forward gears got harder to shift into. finally jacked up the car and crawled under it. (yes, I value my life and did use jack stands) when clutch is depressed, slave push rod comes out until it reaches a point when the bracket on which the slave is mounted begins to bend.
any suggestions

Thrust bearing???????
This is the spring that pushes the clutch plate fully away from the flywheel when you press the pedal. If it is worn then the clutch never fully disengages.
As reverse gear very rarely has a synchromesh then this is the only time you will notice (until it gets worse and will eventually happen in 1st as well).
There may be other causes but that is a starter for 10.
