OK if you could only take a single lens with you on holiday, what one would you take and why.

Probably the 17-55 - but then I'd mostly be taking landscapes.

BTW something I've been meaning to ask for AGES is why so many here spell lens, lense? Is it the Yank spelling? My OED doen't even have Lense... only lens from the latin 'Lens lentis' or lenses (lens plural)

And this from Kodak's glossery. Lens: One or more pieces of optical glass or similar material designed to collect and focus rays of light to form a sharp image on the film, paper, or projection screen.

...or maybe I'm missing something?

From my current collection, the 18-70. But if I had to choose a 'one size fits all' lens I think there's an 18-200 from Tamron or Tokina. Wide angle is more important to me than massive telephoto.

But if you're taking an SLR, which is not exactly shirt-pocket stuff, why not squeeze another lens in? Better that than be faced with the 'Damn, wish I'd brought the...' scenario.

Probably that new Tamron DI 28-300, assuming it's not shite.

My 17-85 IS is great - wide angle to medium zoom, and the image stabilisation gives flexibility for indoor and arty shots that you couldn't otherwise get.

But who buys a DSLR and makes do with just one lens? Canon's 50mm prime is very small and light, so easily slips into the camera bag. And there's probably room for a 200/300 long lens as soon as I can find the money!

Going against the flow here...

But it would probably be a fixed focal length lens - my 45mm AI-P Nikkor!

Why? Because it's so small, you have to think about focusing and framing and it produces excellent results.

Interesting - what is the variant? U.S.? (If so, where the hell did lenz come from?!)

BTW - I'd agree with the sentiment: why take one lens on hols. I spent most of my last holiday on a beach in the Indian Ocean... but still took 3 lenses.

Yep. Still some in the camera mind.

Which beach? This one:

Lemuria, Praslin, Seychelles. HIGHLY reccommended.

(You can see why more than one lens was a good move )

Although I spent a great deal of time sitting at this bar :

Hard work, I can tell you.

Ah!

Dreaming of the Maldives, meself!

Got an underwater housing for the little Sony snapper, last year, so snorkelling's sorted. Haven't been there with the DSLR yet, though. Need to cope with fruit bats, sunsets and geckos, so a 14-400mm Macro will be ideal, methinks!

"lenz" was the pronunciation guide, should have taken that out for clarity. And you're right, 'lense' was the US variant.
