I saw this image tonight and can’t believe how far away from the original modern design the new version is, quite frankly it could be any car and to me it’s lost it’s identity, poor show in my opinion, no doubt it will sell loads as it retains a badge that says Mini Cooper .

I'll stick to my 1963 original I think.

Looks a little like a Suzuki Swift from the rear, with a bit of Peugeot thrown in for good measure. I think from other angles it looks a little more like a MINI, but agree they've strayed a long way from the template on this one. Maybe over time the design will mellow, but I do wonder if they'll regret the direction they've taken. Mrs ZS has had 4 MINI's now, but isn't too enamored with the new design so unless it grows on her over the next couple of years she'll probably be looking at other brands when it comes to changing her car.

Blimey... I thought you were talking about the red mini and it's size next to another small hatchback.

It was only the previous post that made me notice the mini badge. Looks nothing like a mini. Could be anything.

I mean they were st then and they didn't make any reliable improvements over the years, so they were shot to the end.
Dad had a 59 mini, which had 3 gearboxes under warranty.
I had a 74 1000, a 78 1100 clubman a 79 850 and an 88 1000. They were all st. Also had a 87 Metro 1275 sport and 85 metro turbo. They weren't much better.
On the other had the 2001 Cooper we had was a decent car.

yes Yep. My dad had an early one, it wasn't that old but fell to bits. The old sliding window fell out one winters night as he was driving over Salisbury Plain, made for a rather unpleasant and very chilly journey.

The fact they churned out the same basic design for 5 decades is one of the reasons we no longer have a "proper" motor industry in the UK.

From what I can gather about the original Mini...

You buy one, then purchase various parts, upgrades and spend X amount of money on restoring it and you end up with a fantastic go kart like car that handles like nothing else.

Or buy one that has had this done already.

Just look at them as a blank canvas and you won't be disappointed.

With regards the new one...nope it is horrible, however, the prices are reasonable from what I have seen.

It bears no resemblance to the original or indeed to any Mini or MINI. Horrific styling from that bastion of horrific styling, BMW.

That said, I saw my first Funky Cat Ora from behind today. Wow, that deserves an award for ugly with weird lights.

Well it certainly isn't a looker!

And looks nothing like a Mini.

This new mini reminded me of the Ora.

I work for a company that was part of BL in Lancashire, that is now owned by an American company. Recently a number of people have retired, who started apprenticeships there in the late 70s.

I wouldn't say we no longer have a motor industry in the UK. Many of the factories are still there. New factories have been built.

We are less vertically integrated (we no longer grow the carrots for the canteen) and rely on more suppliers, to do the engineering of complex systems.

Unfortunately very little of it is UK owned. Which means that the profit flows out of the UK.

If you want to change that, buy shares (if you can) in those companies that are listed on a stock exchange. Then you'll get a dividend which will flow back to the UK.

A black estate looking car pulled up at the pavement whilst I was walking by.

Not like me to not know the make, model of a car as soon as I see it biggrin

Had to look at the badges.

A new John Cooper Works Countryman.

It were fekin' huge! and certainly didn't look like a Mini.

Weirdly enough, I think in the right colour and right trim I could actually quite like the new Countryman. But I agree it looks nothing like a mini any more.

Depends what for. The F56 is big enough to be useable as a main car for a lot of people rather than a weekend toy for car shows.

I’m not keen on the styling of the latest car, especially the rear, but the size doesn’t bother me.

Perhaps it appears that I am the only one who doesn't mind progress, but here are my observations from the one pic.

There are still many copied styling cues from one to the other making it instantly recognisable but probably more so from a different angle. It looks like the side view would be virtually identical except for the spoiler. The window line is identical, the roofline is identical, the rear bumper looks very similar if you remove the diffuser, the only REAL change is the rear lights, which do look a bit gorky.

Do you all want every car to stay exactly the same?

Do you never want any style changes to be put on a car?

Is this what the current Vauxhall Viva should still look like?

Oh, and don't forget MINI is a brand name not an indication of size.

They've been getting it wrong for a while imo. The coupe version in particular. The best of the BMW era is the OG R53.

I was an early adopter of an F56 Cooper in Volcanic Orange.

I got a lot of comments about it no longer looking like a MINI, compared to earlier models etc, and to that, I say bks!

Show your average person in the street a photo of the new one, and they'll say it's a MINI.

Looks like a Suzuki Swift.

My sister says that unless it's a 3 door it's not a MINI; ie Countryman, Clubman excluded. Same logic applies to the Fiat 500 - the XL et al are not 500's
