Has there been a change on assigning a registration?

I sold a car and registration to someone a few years ago. I'm getting the registration back with the current owner having just put it on retention (no nominee).

DVLA info online doesn't appear to be saying that there must be a nominee in order to transfer it onto someone else's vehicle. See screenshot. I've exhausted looking at DVLA info online.

Can it go right onto my vehicle online with my V5/Doc ref number? I'm surprised at this because I thought it was essential to be a nominee first. I'm wondering it DVLA have changed this.

I don't particularly want the registration on my current vehicle but I know the only alternative is having the retention certificate sitting with my name as a nominee, so really still in the hands of the grantee. I might be best to assign it and then put it on retention myself, hence wondering if it can be assigned to me in the first instance.

All you need is the retention certificate number and the V5 number of the target vehicle.

Ok, thanks so maybe it has changed. I seem to remember in days gone by you had to be down as a nominee before it could go onto your vehicle (i.e. nominee name matching the registered keeper's name on V5)

Actually here's an unrelated question - not big into private plates, just only got my first.

The guy sent over the retention doc, but I just picked up my second plate and all I got is a picture of the retention doc - not the actual document itself. CC and the seller say this is fine, and that's alright - I've made my peace with that.

But my question is, when I put it on my car, and then a little while later take it back off again, does the retention doc come back to me automatically from the V5 document, or will it go back to whoever had it on retention last?

When you take a plate off a car and put it on retention, the named party on the V5 gets the plate. Although as discussed, the retention certificate number is actually the only thing that matters, so don't put pictures of it online!

I can't remember whether there is an option to assign it to someone else at the point of putting it on retention or not, as I've never done that.

So on the above basis, if I’d prefer not to assign the plate (the one I wanted back again) to my current car it sounds like it’d be reasonably ok to have myself as a nominee on the retention doc and have it sitting like that for a while?

This being on the basis I trust the person quite well and that he/I wouldn’t be passing around info on the retention document number.

When it did come to assigning online, does the grantee do much? I assume you’d need to enter thier email address and suchlike..

I need to decide whether to go for putting the plate on my current car or just keeping it on retention for a while.

Obviously choice 3 is putting it on my car and taking it back off again straight away but that’s a bit of a costly nuisance.
