I know this has been mentioned elsewhere but thought it deserved its own thread just so I can give it a shout out. I have one more episode to watch but I have been blown away by this series. I always thought that Lonesome Dove is the best Western series ever made, but this is close. It is an absolutely stunning show, from the cinematography, to the story, to the cast and the standard of acting. Sam Elliott is superb, his best performance ever, I think. The female leads are also superb, the daughter being stand out. There is a definite sense of realism and an insight into the toughness and resilience of the European pioneers who travelled west.

Agree 1883 is great, classic Taylor Sheridan directing, lots of beautiful vistas and storytelling. I didn't enjoy 1923 so much, in fact i cant even remember finishing it.

New series of 1883 airs in Feb. New Sheridan series 6666 also on the way - 6666 is about the vast ranch in Texas the red shirt cowboys work for that featured in Yellowstone.

It’s also the ranch he now owns…

Same here. Really enjoyed 1883 - watched 1 or 2 of 1923 and never went back.

One of my favourite Sam Elliot characters is Beau Bennett in The Ranch sitcom on Netflix. So so funny.

I thought 1883 was better than Yellowstone. The lead actress was just brilliant. And the end was heartbreaking.

I thought she was brilliant, I'm surprised she hasn't done more mainstream stuff since this.

Does a small voiceover in the last series of Yellowstone count? !883 was Sheridan's best so far IMO.

I'm of the same opinion, 1883 was one of the best tv shows I've watched in years. I did watch all of 1923 and wasted several hours of my life doing so, an absolute turkey of a show, by far the worst show Taylor Sheridan has been involved with.

Started this yday and really liked the first episode … think of how vast the American west is from Texas all the way west to California, Northwest to Oregon and north to Montana…quite the leap of faith for those early pioneers to head into the unknown and v hostile territory in search of somewhere to settle. Need to read up more on how the west was colonised by white settlers…intriguing topic and one of the great migrations of people in human history.

Always remember a line from, I think, Chisum, a John Wayne western. Ranch owner was asked how big his land was 'As far as you can see and four days further' was the answer. That's perspective

I can highly recommend 'The Men Who Built America: Frontiersmen' which covers exactly this, from the time of Daniel Boone being the first to venture over the mountains and into the unknown, to the first frontiers to ever travel all the way to the west coast. Brilliant series.

If you like this sort of thing, another Sherridan produced western is Bass Reeves, Lawman. I thought it was excellent

I thought 1883 was good, but I'm now watching 1923 and prefer it. Seems that's not a popular view

After watching 1883, I wondered if the Yellowstone TV programme (from which it's based) was named after Yellow's headstone, i.e. Yellow's stone

Really liked this series, much better than 1923 for me. Bit bleak at times but I guess that's what they were trying to show. Some great dialogue though.

Better than 1923 but i could've done without the young girl's voiceover :

My little brother travelled with us but he died of a stubbed toe in Longsdale
My Auntie was a god fearing woman but she drank the river water and died an excrutiating death lasting weeks
My Uncle went to a bar and there was a disagreement, he was found in an alley with a columbian necktie
My Cousin woke up one morning (died)

etc etc
