Just wondering whether anyone has any experience of this device, now reduced to £149, which seems good value.

Autoexpress gave it a recommended in April 2005

and these chaps seemed quite impressed too:

They look OK,

what do you actually want from this sort of device, fixed cameras/vans/blackspots/specs.

Road Angel now do a RA mini thats £199, seems to be a Road Angel without the lazer feature (which is pretty redundant anyway)

Plus a new Sat Nav system with a RA built in.

These look a better more stylish alternative, as above says,
lazer is a dead loss anyway telling you at the same time you get caught, one of these for most people enough

Cant' speak for the 'mini' version,
my RA classic is free first year up-date with lead and software supplied,
and mine was £99 forever after, thats it.

I update it each month to pick up any fresh sites and blackspots, and very well it works too.

The golf ball type windscreen thing is the redundant lazer detector,
other wise the unit sits on dash and looks for sats' giving you a speed readout/cam warning as and when.

I disagree - it has saved me from unmarked cars twice now as it seems to pick up some sort of laser? I know it doesnt make much sence but it has worked some how using the laser 'mobile' warning

Can't recommend the Road Angel 2 enough. If they are now £200 without laser then I would get it. I have one with, but thought like most that it would be too late to react etc. But as Turboguru has had a 'good' experience of this maybe there is something in it.
I got a surprise the other day, driving on the M1 the RA2 beeped a warning, filtered through road works area and the screen was staying red and would beep every few seconds. Wondering if something was wrong with it, took a good look at the display to find it was warning me that I was driving through an average speed over distance area/trap and only returned to standby mode when confirmed by the road signs that the speed limit had changed. Maybe you guys know that, I didn't realise it was that specific. I have had mine for about six months now.
Back on topic, for fifty quid more than the Talex you'll get something abit more sophisticated than leds counting down.

your quite right as well,

I perhaps should have added, that around here,
the cameravans are rife, and it seems any opportunity, to 'pick out' anything sportscarwise
as a prospective target, renders the detector,
a bit redundant,
given the split second between the alarm sounding/their reading being taken.

I'm sure, driving along in anything else, would'ent draw their attention, and perhaps set off the alarm as it picks up a bit of radar scatter.

Does SP CS, want device for car in his profile,
or something less obvious, a target for the
'cash machines'

Indeed Rich, the one and only car in my possession.

There's not much in it pricewise once you take the subscription into account, esp if you go lifetime with RA classic. I believe the Talex is £59 for 3 years, plus a USB lead for £20 (you get a serial connector).

Is the RA classic a single box, ie no separate antenna? And powered from cig lighter? Its got to be easily removable, esp where I live.

Thanks
Shirish

Comes with a windscreen mounting tray
PC Lead
Two power leads straight/curly
and the golf ball windscreen mounted detector,
if you wish to use it, it unplugs to remove/hide when not in use, yes.

I'm having the extra re-rad aerial, since I want to conceal it a bit, and do'nt really need to look at screen display, as the alerts each sound different, and you soon identify them without looking.

I'll be corrected no doubt but, RA do their best to point out;
(functional and directed) fixed cameras,

known places of mobiles actually occupied or not,

Specs,

and known accident blackspots,

but by the nature of this behaviour;
look carefully now

at the same instant your alarm goes off,
You may have been the one targeted
