I am fine but bone tired. I have a day off; we must all take one by order of the mental health officer(she is driving me f**king nuts). My Emergency Operations Center never lost power. The emergency power is sufficient to run all AC and computers. I wanted to respond to various threads, but thought is more practical to begin a new one. First, New Orleans is what it is, a city full of criminals and "different" people. I still live in Baton Rouge...thank God. My house is un damaged and my power came back up 4 days later. Don't blame Bush or our dumbass Governor....blame the Mayor of New Orleans for not using the buses provided beforehand to move those who had no transportation out of the city. Now, the official death toll for all of Louisiana is 279, not 10,000-20,000 as people were saying. That 279 includes the other 7 parishes beside New Orleans that were affected. NO...people were not forced to leave their homes after the storm, just strongly urged. Constitutional ruling did not allow forced removal. Bottom line...279 dead, not 20,000....we DID rescue the fools despite deep water, toxic soup, and being fired upon by the lowlifes that inhabit every city in the world and lay low waiting for chaos to loose them on the world. I have a lot more to say and want to answer your questions, this will take time, so bear with me. Untilthe, thank you very much for your thoughts, prayers and concerns....they mean a lot to me.

Best wishes and good luck, Jim, and enjoy (if you can) your day away. I can't imagine what the last 2 weeks will have been like.

Fond (if hazy) memories of Bourbon Street, seems strange to think of it so deserted.

Hey, good to hear that its not all doom and gloom. You are right though, we hear all this bad news on the TV news and its good to get some reality in all of this!

You are doing a great job and you should give yourself a jolly good pat on the back for doing so. Fortunately for people like me, there are people like you - to help in an emergency....

Oh, and sorry to sound a pain - chances are that this mental health woman has some good advice. I have never been involved in anything like this, but I know a few who have. You can be more help with a bit of rest and do make sure you take a damn good holiday soon. You will need it.

Good luck and best wishes - dont know if you have seen the UK news recently - we have panic buyers of petrol at the moment leading to shortages. Bizzare world eh?

We had petrol lines here for about 4 days. We got the off shore oil rigs up quicker than anticipated and airlifted refinery personnel back into the flooded parishes to restart the refinement process. Our petrol lines are gone now and back to $2.49/US gallon as of this morning. I will continue to update.

Hi Jim. What kind of car do you hanker after now, all things considered?

I still have my Mustang and Jeep; did I miss the point of the question? We did not flood here in Baton Rouge, if that is what you meant.

I was wondering how much material things still meant after the apocalypse - even if it didn't hit your area as badly as elsewhere. Has it altered your view of what a man needs in order to lead a happy life?

I have always thought, as I was taught, that family, love, respect, and faith comes first...material things are nice, but are just that....material. Were you trying to out me as a materialistic person, catch me with my guard down on 3 hours of sleep a night....not on your best day Left Coast hero! I hope this does not hurt your ego, but you can be seen coming farther away than a fat lady to a fudge eating contest! How will you feel when LA opens up and sucks everything under your ass into a huge crack in the ground? Don't worry though, your head is big enough to keep you from going through.....maybe you can stay at Jay Leno's house. Please spare me your cheap attempts at blindsiding.

Jimbeaux - I'm glad all is well for you personally. It's refreshing to get the perspective of somebody who has actually been in the affected area and can cut though all the bull$hit and tell us what is going on. From 1000 miles away and careful listening to the CNN / Fox reports I gathered as much but it is nice to have it confirmed.

The critical bit of information I heard was that there were reports that said the levees would not stand a force 4 hurricane and the failure mode was predicted and modelled, so any Mayor with commonsense would have ordered an evacuation regardless of the destruction level in New Orleans from the hurricane, because the likelihood of flooding was high as a subsequent effect.

Of course it is always easy to be wise after the event.

Anyway, thanks for the update and look after yourself.

You bet, Bodo. I should have known better than expect insight, eh? I've heard of drowning men lashing out at their rescuer but that reply is beyond redemption.

Maybe, just maybe, a degree of leeway may be in order, considering what he has been through. Idiots.

Edit to say: Nice to hear from you Jim, make sure you enjoy your (short) break and keep us up to date

Which was exactly my purpose: a gentle question, but Jim doesn't like my politics (as he perceives them) so he decided he didn't need my enquiry. Go figure.

Don't give me that crap LA; you asked me "So, what car do you fancy now?". You, by admission on your followup, was to "see how material things matter now to me". That would have been a valid question had you not framed it is such an obviously provoking and smartassed manner.
