Hi I have a cluster f of an issue.

Issue with car, dashboard lit up, parking sensors, ecs power steering light and failure.

Took it to mechanic who said it needs steering rack, free diagnostics, mechanic plugged into the computer cleared all fault codes and only one that remains was loss of communication with steering rack.

Mechanic replaced the steering rack but fault was still there. Said it needs a brand new rack from VW, which costs 2k, unwilling to spend this on a vehicle I bought 8 months prior, I sourced a part from supplier who supply reconditioned racks for £600, but the garage wanted me to purchase it, as they don't cover labour warranty and not a supplier garage uses.

Purchased the part, and it arrived but supplier sent wrong part, paid garage labour for trying to fit part, and opened dispute with supplier if they can contribute to labour.

Correct part sent and issue still there, garage said new error code now with power effort module, and they hired a auto electrician £80 to check all wiring and stuff as garage did not have the tools to do this.

Took it for second opinion who diagnosed it and said it could be a wiring fault as oil sensor and rack run on the same wiring loom but asked £425 to check it.

Told garage about this and they said they checked the wiring so it's not that but they want to strip down and test the electronic parts of the steering column and effort module.

I really don't know what to do from here I've spent £1000+ already and issue is still not fixed.

If I take it somewhere else will have to pay a lot for diagnostics again.

Any advice on what to do next?

Do I take it back to the garage and ask them to fix the problem, or find a new garage that are confident in fixing it.

Thanks.

Are the garage a VW specialist? Stuff like that could well be a "They all do that sir" for someone who really knows the cars.

What sort of garage did you take it to?

Are they experienced in Vw's?

My recommendation is to get it to a proper specialist, even a main dealer.

They'll have previous experience of similar faults, and VW have access to technical service bulletins.

Chances are an experience garage in the marque will have come across similar problem, and will know what it is, rather than lengthy diags..

The second opinion was with a VW specialist, garage is local.

If I take it to someone else they will have to fault find again, I don't think I can get refund from the first garage for potential misdiagnosis.

I had this on my A6 Allroad - power steering failure, 'do not drive' etc.

Local garage could not diagnose it with the VAG reader and concluded likely needs a new rack (3k fitted)

A little time on YouTube and a nice guy in Bradford said there's a control module under the rear seat squab which communicates with the rack and advised resecure the wires with a cable tie. Did this and bingo job sorted!

I know its a different car but same maker so worth at least excluding this possibility.

Check the battery voltage. Bit of a coincidence that most of that can be triggered by low battery at ignition on.

Specialist found the fault broken canbus wire around the air filter.

So the rack did not need replacing, is it worth getting compo from the first garage, they said they checked wiring and paid and electrician to do it.

So glad you have sorted the original problem , most modern cars especially the vag group cars are very sophisticated and require a fully UpToDate electronics engineer otherwise the "parts canon" ie lets fit a new rack and see if it fixes it ! They are way beyond most so called specialists

Have a look at Diagnose Dan on YouTube

I've got a VW Caddy Maxi Life and have had it from new, at about 2 and a half years old i started to experience what felt almost like a brief misfire which gradually got worse until eventually it brought on the EML and caused limp mode.

RAC checked it and said it was a cam position failure so recovered it to the dealer, dealer changed the sensor and gave me the car back, i had barely left the industrial estate before it did the sam thing again so drove straight back to the dealer.

They then fitted another sensor and guess what? yep less than a mile down the road and it was doing it again. This then lead to a total of 15 weeks off the road whilst they sought advice from VW Technical in Germany and i ended up with the whole engine bay of the car being replaced due to a break in the loom somewhere.

It sounds very much similar to your scenario, mine was covered under the OE warranty but if it was that difficult to find the fault for a main dealer with vw technicals assistance i think trying to get compo from an independant garage for a very similar issue will be a struggle.
