Porsche 996 loud whine
Discussion
On my 1998 C2 I get a loud whine from the engine. Its related to the rpms and its fairly loud and horrible up to 3000rpm until the exhaust over takes the noise over 3000rpm. It seems to come from the left side of the engine around the altenator area me thinks. Ive changed a couple of pulleys and a tensioner at the cost of a £100 but still no joy in curing the horrible whine. What could it be and how do i cure it?? Another thing i noticed recently, when i have the sterring at full lock either left or right, the there seems to be a secondary whine which is even louder then the orginal one...although it could just be the same whine getting louder?? All help welcomed!!
Precise location of annoying noises is simple.
Get a long bit of "high tech" stick. Put one end in yer ear, and move the other around the engine listening for the loudest place from which the noise is coming.
It's probably a bearing, but I've no idea which or where.
Watch out for getting the stick bound up in the moving parts. If you're unlucky the "high tech stick" will be launched into flight, forced into your inner ear and fired out the top of your skull.
At least it's a quick end, and you don't have to worry about the noise any more.

Sounds very much like low level in your hydraulic fluid reservoir - was getting a similar whining on my 993tt on full lock and she badly needed topping up with Pentosin CHF11S (don't know if yours uses the same - check the manual).
If I were you I'd top it up before driving any further as you risk shagging the hydraulic pressure pump - your friendly OPC will no doubt want to empty your wallet for a replacement!
Edited to add that I don't know whether yours has a hydrualic fluid reservoir as such but it certainly sounds like low level on the power steering system.

Thank you for all your replies, i will check the power steering fluid. The drive belt seems to be fine and with no cracks at all. It is going in for a new clutch at northway on wedensday next week, I'm hoping they can find the problem. The whine other than the power steering one seems to come from the left side of the engine where the altenator is and its there all the time, getting louder as the rpms increase. Very Annoying.
It could also be that the wrong fluid has been installed and its over heating in the recent warmer weather.
When it boils, its the bubbles going through the pump that makes the noise.
Changing the fluid is not difficult. Remove the pump return pipe (the one that goes into the pump reservoir), stick it in a bin lining and turn lock to lock with the engine running. Replace the pipe, refill the reservoir with correct fluid and repeated slow lock to lock turns (all whilst parked) to bleed the new fluid through. It will make a terrible racket whilst doing all this, that will gradually disappear as the good fluid flushes through all parts of the system.
Be aware that you may not have full steering assistance when you first drive the car after swapping the fluid.

The alternator bearing might be going - I've had several replacements.

How much would an alternator bearing cost roughly and where would be a good place to go in an around the london area??

Don't know - I've had 3 alternators replaced for free. Cost new around 650 pounds...
