As much as I enjoy Ashby Folville - and I really do - I was chatting to a friend recently who told me it was getting too big and full of stuff which shouldn't really be there.
Tonight, I found out it was full of PEOPLE who shouldn't be there either.

I was there with the 13yr old son of one of my work colleagues who I'd been promising to take for ages.
We were looking at an american something-or-other and I put my arm into the open window to point out the pistol shaped handle attached to a spotlight by the passenger wing mirror - which he thought was 'cool'
Next thing I know theres the owner yelling at me to get my fcuking arm out of his car and fcuk off and starts shoving me away from his car yelling abuse at me.
Now since I had the young son of a colleague with me and an expensive camera in one hand I wasn't about to start trouble but he was VERY up for it.
I didn't touch anything and the window was open - so whats the point of bringing the damned car if you dont want people shoving their head in an open window.
During one of his rants he 'asked' me if I'd like it if he shoved his hand in my car, whereupon I pointed out my TVR Griffith, telling him it wasnt even locked if he wanted to go sit in it, this enraged him even more though.

So I've decided that was my last AF meet.
I've met some great people there and seen some amazing cars, but If this is the type of person who is going to attend, I'd rather not bother.

Thanks for your comments LA, much appreciated.

AF is supposed to be a summer-only monthly meeting of like-minded individuals who love cars and/or bikes. Some have ones worth looking at so they take them to a small village in Leicestershire called Ashby Folville, pay a pound for charity and park on the local cricket pitch (cars) or around the local pub (bikes). Then get a beer and maybe an ice cream (or both) and wander around in awe and amazement at the things other people keep in their garages.

I think I've fixed the other thread. Thanks.

Sad to hear that Ian, personally I would love to have sat in the Griff!
I have never managed to get to AF as yet but from reports I have heard that it is a very nice and very interesting meet indeed. Just a shame that some fools - the very smallest minority - have to spoil it for everyone else.

The guy sounds like a complete asshole, he must have a few issues and be carrying a bit of baggage around too to overreact like that. An American car you say? with an appleton too? maybe he was just getting into the groove by acting like a redneck

Don't let it put you off. Unfortunatly there are nutters around who really miss the point.

Sounds like a lot like "Cars in the park". If you turn up, then don't be too supprised if people want a nosy at your nice car. Thats the whole point of these events.

You can always come to the next meet at "Cars in the park@Bolton Abbey on the 16th October" (ADVERTISMENT) .

Hell, people even bake cakes for the event! Or meybe where just really friendly in yorkshire

You should have said so at Le Mans Ben. I would gladly have taken you for a spin. In fact, if I ever get to one of the Notts outings I'll give you a shout and we can arrange something.

Ah, is that what the spotlight-on-a-stick is called. You live and learn - now if only the redneck asshole had talked to me I might have learned a whole lot more
Hows the bus BG - is it all fixed now?

I've mentioned this to the Mrs and if the weather is good we'll be coming up in the Griff. So fingers crossed for good weather.

Thanks for all your support chaps. I appreciate all your comments and it's restored faith a little bit that we are, after all, likeminded people who love just being around cars.

Hi 2SB,

If I recall correctly you are one of the 'great people' I've met there.
I'm not convinced though.

I can't tell you how many times I've thought "I should have just punched the arse" and if I go again I might just be tempted, which is what scares me because I gave up scrapping as kids stuff years ago and everyone knows I'm a nice guy.

I suppose I'll torment myself with all the 'what ifs' for a while yet but I think I'll trot up to the Papplewick meet instead next year, unless anyone has any other suggestions.

Cheers for the offer Ian, I seem to remember Le Mans involved lots of drinking and limited opportunites to think of sensible ideas!
I am definitely going to come to as many local meets as possible when I am back home so we are sure to meet again next year! I will look out for the Griff in town as well - shouldn't be too hard to find!

Perhaps we should all team up and form a gang for the next one, we could have colours and everything, maybe even hairnets.

Sorry to hear about that incident, Ian. As you know, I think AF is just too big for its own good now.

Papplewick have added Sunday meets over the winter, if I can find the flyer, I'll post the details.

Ah, found it.

May-September 2006, FIRST Wednesday of the month, Griffins Head, Papplewick (as before), THIRD Wednesday of the month, Ye Olde Bridge Inn, Nottingham Road, Oxton (just off the A6097/B6386 roundabout).

I can't find the details for the Sunday meets (sorry), but you might email Kev on kmarshall427@btinternet.com as he may know.
