I'm trying to get an approximate cost for a 996 engine rebuild or to drop in a recditioned engine if I can find one .... alternatively does the car have any value as it is / where would I be best trying to sell it?

The only information I have from the garage is it's totally ceased, they tried to crank it and can't

The car's an 01 carrerra 4 cabriolet and trying to find out what's best to do with it.

Tip or Manual box? For reference a Hartech rebuild for 6 pistons and liners is 10k +Vat. If you have damage to cams or crank you could be looking at a lot more on top again. If its a low miles, well specced manual it might be worth it. If its a high miles Tip probably not, at least from a financial POV, but its your car at the end of the day

you need to strip it down and see what the problem is, rebuild cost's varies so much it's to hard to say, cars with rebuilt engines are sort after so it is worth fixing if the car is in good condition, if the crankshaft in your engine is not damaged that alone is worth about 2k so there's still plenty of value in it. find someone who can strip it down agree a price just for that first., then take it from there once you know the score. no pun.

Try a breaker like 9-apart for a price as is.

here to view some prices in Belgium for a 996 engine

edit: I see the link does not work because of some smile thing in the link, but on that site many Porsche engines, and say the 996 engines from 10k just look for Porsche engine or Porsche 996 engine or another model say a 4.0 ;-)

It's manual and about 88k miles, codition's not great if I'm honest it's been kept oustide for 20 years and had some water ingress last year.

I was about to spend some money having it restored / bought back to pristine condition as I now have the possibility of garaging it, just glad this happened before I'd spent a few thousand in it!

A fully rebuilt pristine car is probably worth 20k finished. So if you work back from there it would probably cost say 10k to 15k all in to fix. So then you have to decide if you could be better off selling for 5 to 10 as is. I don't see you getting 10k but surely 5k is achievable.
