Random whatsapp message, what's the scam?

I go this random message (haven't opened it yet but can read it from the preview drop down)

Hello I haven't contacted you for a long time. I don't know if you still remember me so I sent you a photo of me. I really miss you, how are you? My whatsapp account has been discontinued and would like you ta add my telegram account. You can click on the telegram link below to contact me.

phone number was [phone] so country code Nigeria so obviously a scam

Are they just pumping this out to thousands of random number to just try and find a live number to pass onto another scammer or do they want me to engage in some way? Why are they trying to converse over telegram rather than the "discontinued" whatsapp? That's bizarre in itself.

The fact I have a scammers number what can I do to get other scammers to contact them or mess them around in a big way without responding to them

Just random scammers.
I've had a couple of them try me on WhatsApp, first was a recruiter offering a £40ph job with no job details.
Second was very much like what you received.
I just blocked them and forgot about it.

Even if 1 in 10,000 people fall for it, that's all they need.

Not specific to the this whatsapp scam, but plenty of others via email, Instagram I've seen people fall for.

It's always the old / very naive that fall for it and like I said, they only need 1.
