Brute force but less ignorance...We hear that Porsche announced in Frankfurt yesterday that it will definitely make a hybrid version of the Cayenne.

The new SUV is planned to cut fuel consumption by 15 per cent using technology developed in cahoots with its long-standing partner Volkswagen.
The system allows both petrol and electric motors to work either independently or together, and the car will be ready by 2010.

All that effort and it only cuts fuel consumption by 15%?
Hardly worth the effort, you'd be better off with a normal Cayenne and putting it on LPG, the only benefit it could have is maybe around town when its on electric only, but really who buys a Cayenne as a city runabout apart from rich people who don't give a damn about fuel economy?

i dont see the point of hybrid suvs or 4x4s because they still are quite thirsty. i think a small stylish hatch, coupe or saloon would be cool say a smart for example.
i mean the only small hybrib out there is the toyota prius, not the most desirable car in the world.
I agree, or an estate. I'd definitely change the Passat for a hybrid, as it mainly hauls children (and all their stuff!) about on shortish journeys.
Coupla months back I was driving across Tower Bridge, happily abiding the 20 mph speed limit which is enforced by SPECS.....before I could enjoy the view I had some fool flashing lights, jesturing all sorts with various hand movements trying to get me to speed up. After getting past the final SPEC camera, and the road widened out, the guy overtook me and we exchanged glares. What car was he driving.....a Toyota Prius, just shows - you can be as righteous as you want about conservation but it doesn't make you exempt from being a tosser !
Just thought it was slightly ironic going against the lovey dovey cuddly greeny impression that so many people like to present.

A "green" Cayenne SUV, ha ha, that's just great. How about some swamp-land in South Florida while you're at it, we can make a package deal for you.
First of all, the Cayenne is a pig at 5300 pounds it weighs 11 80-pound bags of cement more than my wife's 5-cylinder turbocharged Volvo XC90 AWD. With that much weight you most certainly need a V8 to haul your posterior and the excess weight around.

It seems to me Porsche could single-handedly make hybrids cool. Start with a hybrid boxter and work up. Of course, leave the regular gas engine in the Turbo.
Reminds me of a Curb Your Enthusiasm episode I just saw. Larry David (Seinfeld writer, is Curb your enthusiasm shown in the UK?) drives a Prius in real life and on the show. In this episode he's driving around and spots another one and waves to it, then gets annoyed when the other driver doesn't wave back. "We drive Priuses, we're a special group!"
