Yet people wonder why they get poor quality answers from HMRC without realising that the person dealing with with their complex tax query is paid less than a till operator at Aldi who just has to mindlessly waive items over the barcode scanner.

I think I would rather a till operator at Aldi to be handling my tax, honestly. Says who?WFH in this type of role is generally productive since there are various management systems to ensure that you are working when logged on. A call centre handler cannot, for example, just not take calls, the system would flag it straight away. That type of work has a fixed and measurable deliverable.

Looks like the model is really working huh . Its a cancer spreading through the entire civil service ( translate : people paid by tax payer to do a function ) Ever increasing ( dramatic) headcount and ever downward spiralling delivery . Like I said, clearly working.

You're on about the real living wage and not what the current government calls the living wage. Agreed.National minimum and living differ only in marketing terms and age brackets when it comes to government output.
An obvious conclusion is that they don't think people under a certain age should earn a living wage but it's just semantics and not worth worrying about as it's missing the bigger picture. The government set minimum living wage does not meet its requirements.
