I cant be alone in thinking my petrol tank has a never ending supply of Super Plus. The amount of times i have roled it into an Esso is astounding. Your driving along through the countryside and you glance down at the petrol guage and its nearly empty. The worst thing is that in a Chimaera you never know how empty it is. Driving along the M1 I am cruising at 90mph and i have just missed the service station. No matter cant be too far to the next one. "17 miles, i can make it" five minutes later "oh no i can't" Orange motorway phone and an hour later Flat Bed lorry to take me to the pumps. Does any other TVR owner have an amuzing out of petrol story?

Bet your boss was impressed. What was it Chim,Cerb,Tuscan? Or do the others have a light to remind you, my baby Chimaera is in the garage at the momment having the speedometer replaced with a new one. The milage got to 28,999 last week and just stopped going around. 200 pounds its going to cost me! These days i try and keep the petrol tank a quarter full at all times. I dont want to have to fork out another 100pounds for a lorry to come. TVR's are very light to push but not for seven miles. S3TAY

Had just picked up my 350i and the owner told me he had just put a new tank of fuel in. I thanked him and drove off, looking at the gauge it was just above the red. Faulty gauge I thought, make a note to get that fixed, good old TVR. Then I conked out about 20 miles up the road....

Remind me to believe the car and not the previous owner in future...

I have never run out of petrol in 26 years of driving. Mr Big however, has probably run out of petrol in every car he has had (including the Griffith). He even managed to run out of oil in a Peugeot 405 SRi (Company Car) and totally fd the engine.

Very nearly ran out of petrol after Duxford. Got to first garage only to be told they were closing. Drove another mile to another garage ony to be told 'sorry mate' we're closing. Luckily there was a 'proper' garage a little further along so was OK!

Just to be boring I am fraid, Its not the greatest idea running low on fuel. All the crap from the bottom of the tank gets drawn up and can clog the filter and fuel lines. I always try to keep at least 1/4 tank in mine
Cheers

One of my mates at University regularly used to need help from passers by to push his metro to the garage for a fill up. Only to jump into the drivers seat and driver off at full bore once they got within 20 yards of said garage.

I try to do the same alex200 when i had to fork out 100 pounds for a lift to the next service station on the M1. I try and keep it topped up to a quarter of a but Chimaera just seems to superplus. Does Alex200 own a Viola coloured Cerbera 4.5 with licence plate 200mph?

Very topical - I ran out of petrol on my way home last night! I've recently only used the Cerbera for short journeys and misjudged how much more fuel it must have used. It stopped on a dark B road with no lighting, no verges and right in a blind spot. Not only that but when I tried using my mobile to call for help I had no reception. Had to run half a mile up the road before my mobile got a good enough signal for me to call my other half who promptly arrived with a can of petrol.

Only other time was on the day I bought my Healey a number of years back and it ran out of petrol 2 miles after I'd picked it up from the vendor. I'm not kidding, there wasn't a garage within 2 miles of his house so how he ever expected the buyer to drive it away I don't know!

I keep 5ltr can of Optimax in the boot for such eventualities to avoid getting caught short.

Was towing the caravan once and was really pushing my luck trying to stretch a tank full. Desperately searching for a petrol station I approached the brow of a hill when the engine coughed, spluttered and died! Just enough momentum to make it over the brow and started rolled down the other side, thinking 'what the f**k am I going to do now.

Could not believe my luck when I spotted the filling station at the bottom of the hill (other side of the road). So coasted down the hill - no PAS, no servo brakes, towing the 'van, and swung across the road onto the forecourt.
Lucky or what?

I was lucky enough to coast into an esso in worksop on my way back from Wroxham and the Norfolk Broads headed back up to Sheffield in Chimaera 400. I was behind a caravan and finaly saw my chance just before the road turns into a 40mph zone with speed camera. Floored it! but whats this? my accelarator peddle cable has snapped. In neutral now and gliding three quarters of a mile into the esso. I did chuckle at how lucky i was. Nothing to do with petrol though.

A few years ago I had a Golf 1.9TDi on short-term lease. I wasn't on a particular mission to test how far the fuel would go, but once (and only once) did I manage to run out of diesel about 100 yards from a station forecourt. Bitch of it was - the 100 yards was up a slight incline! DOH!!!

What are people thoughts on the safety aspect of carrying 5lts of juice in the boot.? I do but a few people have commented that they think it's dangerous... My thoughts are we have 56ltr tank in the boot anyway....

Did you work at a petrol station then Ted?

Otherwise, why should that matter?

I'll get my coat.

Got into this thread late as have been away for a couple of days. I ran out of petrol on the way to Duxford / Mania this year as I got caught in the very heavy traffic gridlocking all the roads round North Weald /M25 early on the Saturday afternoon. It was the first time ever out of fuel with my Griff and have learnt the lesson .....never trust the gauge!!!!!! A fellow Griffer kindly stopped to offer help but I sent him on his way to Duxford.Interestingly, I ended up tapping on car windows of the queueing traffic to see if I could scrounge some fuel but got the clear picture that many were amused to see me reduced to that....I recall it's called schadenfreude. My problem was I didn't want to leave the car unattended with so much traffic around by the side of the road and I had my 10 year old daughter with me so couldn't leave her in the car alone whilst I hiked into Epping to get fuel.My bacon was saved by the RAC who, unknown to me, offer a 'top- up' service to their members albeit at a lower priority than 'real' repairs to other their members so you may have to wait quite a while.I ended up waiting almost 3 hours for the fuel to arrive with the RAC man as he was also stuck in the gridlocked traffic. I gave up on getting to Duxford...(who had my share of the barbie?) and went home and then spent an age reading on here how marvellous Duxford had been.....lesson well and truly learnt! The amusing part was that whilst I waited for the RAC man I must have seen hundreds of motorists turn round next to me contrary to the road sign I was parked next to so as to avoid sitting in the traffic. I get my fuel and the beast started and prepare to do the same only for the boys in blue to arrive and close off the 'escape route' requiring me to go down a lane and then sit in another queue for an hour of traffic leaving the North Weald Saturday market!!!!!
