Any recommendations please? Usually if I'm in the area I grab something to eat at the market or a beigel (obviously) but might have cause to find somewhere to sit down this time.

No particular recommendations, but I recall a number of the restaurants permitting BYO booze, as they're not licensed.

I will keep an eye on this thread as I will be in Laaandon in a few weeks' time. biggrin

Went to Famous Curry Bazaar last year. Nothing earth shattering but we had a good time.

If you add 10 minutes to your walking time, Tayyabs gets my vote.

Tayyabs (or Lahore) better than anything that I've had on Brick Lane.

Booking at Tayyabs is essential if you don't want to queue for 90 minutes.

There is a handy store next to Tayyabs where you can buy bottles of booze - Tayyabs is BYO.

If you do go to Tayyabs, go heavy on the starters - the meat (lamb chops, fish, chicken, shish) is so good.

BUT .. walking down Brick Lane negotiating freebies is much more fun.

Brick Lane's turned into a bit of a tourist attraction in recent years - with the quality of food you expect when places are selling to tourists who won't be coming back rather than locals they want to come back.

You'll get a much better meal just down the road in the Lahore Kabab House (not Lahore One just up the road which is just 'fine'). Don't worry about the "kabab house" name!

You could also try Lahore Kebab House also BYO but food is good 👍

Boring, but totally endorse the love for Tayaabs and Lahore.

Of the 2, Tayaabs get the ultimate vote from me, and many people I've badgered into going.

I'd recommend you go to somewhere that's not on Brick Lane.

Not sure if there are any left, but ~15-20 years ago when I went there a lot, all he restaurants were less than average, it was the 'curry cafes' where you got the best food, and usually very cheap. The slightly scruffy looking places with formica tables you just sit with whoever, with a small selection of curries at a counter they serve in a plastic bowl and you get as much rice as you need.

Never been to Brick Lane, mainly because I've never heard of anywhere there that's worth going for, unfortunately. There are much better Indian restaurants everywhere else!

Of those suggested that are nearby, another vote for Tayyabs from me.

TBH I don't think Brick Lane has decent curry anymore. Likewise Lahore Kebab House (been going for almost 30 years) but is now a victim of it's own success so has been poor on my last couple of visits and don't intend going back.

What did you not like from your last few visits?

Genuine question as it used to be my go-to restaurants. Admittedly, I haven't eaten at Lahore's for at least 5 years now, so expect things/chef to change during this period.

As it happens my friends (Indian) were saying they've stopped going to Lahore - it's now a factory, with variable quality. (paraphrasing)

As it happens we had this convo at Tayyabs a couple of weeks back. Tayyabs was another great meal. And I could hear the table. Saying that we arrived at 6:30 pm on a Friday. As we left, around 9 pm, it was heaving, with a Q out the door.

Many years ago, the Sheba was the most popular curry house down Brick Lane. Last time I walked through there, I think it was still there but the street was like walking past the bars at Playa las Americas, with people trying to drag you in.

Many childhood memories of Dad bringing curry back from Lahore, the Chicken Korai was to die for!

I go once a month to brick lane. Couple of pints in the pride of spitalfields then an 11 quid dinner with BYOB in the taste of jaipur 2 mins away. Lovely stuff

Brick Lane is fine and has a great vibe. I've done several places there, just on a random walk in. Never had a bad experience. May not be absolutely top of the league but perfectly acceptable.
