SLK 230 (1999 registered) cat rattles

Mercedes SLK guru's, I've been advised that the CAT or is that CATS on my 1999 SLK 230 are rattling due to having broken up or in the process of as it still (just) managed to pass MOT emissions test.

I've had a quick look for a replacement set but the type approved ones appear to be north of £600 and then I'll have to get my favourite garage to fit it so ending up around £800 to £900 poss.

Lovely as she is I'm beginning to wonder if the time has come to part company.

Question, anyone know of a supplier who might give me a cheaper alternative and does it have to be type approved given that it was registered in 1999?
