In the last two or three days my battery seems to have fallen off a cliff...
Always put it on the bed side cab to charge at the end of the day and unless I have been caning it, it always has around 70/80% left at the end of the day.
In the last couple of days it's been 5/10%. My usage pattern hasn't changed at all.

So my question is, can batteries drop off so spectacularly in performance in such a short time frame. There has been no gradual decline - it's gone from using around 20% per day to almost running out of power!

I suppose my best bet - as I otherwise have no need for a 'better' or more recent phone - is to get the battery replaced for £85 at the local apple store?

check battery health in settings

if there is an ismash by you a replacement (non apple so you'll get a warning for a few days) should be £49

Settings > Battery will show you exactly which apps have used the most power, down to the hour if you tap on the graph. Press "show activity" and it shows minutes on screen vs background. Some social media apps like Facebook can use a lot as they try to make sure the app is quick to load and show you stuff by getting it in the background.

Go from there into battery health and you can see the max capacity and whether it's limiting performance because the battery is weak. If so, a replacement battery will give you some more years out of it.

Thanks chaps.

I'm guessing that this doesn't bode well.

As said in OP it seems to have fallen off a cliff in the last few days. My usage has - if anything - been even less than usual the last couple of days.

Unlikely it's your battery, those green battery usage bars tell you something has been using the battery far, far more than usual over the past few days. Further down that page you'll have a list of apps showing how much of the battery usage they're responsible for, I suspect you'll find a misbehaving app has been chewing through battery. If so, force close that app and perhaps check for updates to it.

As mentioned previously, it looks like an issue with an app using more power than it should. Have you tried a simple restart of your phone to see if that improves things? What is your maximum battery percentage? (under battery health and charging setting). I’m on my original battery (12) and it’s at 85% and I still get through a day with plenty to spare.

With modern phones you don't need to charge overnight anymore because a full charge only takes around an hour. It's not good for the battery leaving it plugged in. Just charge when the battery gets low and unplug when done

this is all handled by Optimised Charging in modern phones. https://support.apple.com/en-gb/108055

"Your iPhone uses on-device machine learning to learn your daily charging routine so that Optimised Battery Charging will only activate when your iPhone predicts it will be connected to a charger for an extended period of time. The algorithm aims to ensure that your iPhone is still fully charged when unplugged."

Randomly plugging it in for short periods of time at inconsistent times across the days actually causes more damage to modern phone batteries.

As has been said, it's unlikely that a battery would degrade so much in a few days.

Check to see what apps have been using the battery.

Also, what is the health of your battery?

Tap on settings/battery/battery health and charging:

Then check the battery capacity, and also check that "Optimised Battery Charging" is enabled.

For reference, mine is an iPhone 12 Pro bought refurbished from Apple 2 years ago, so the battery is likely only 2 years old, hence still at 97% capacity.

Scroll down on that screen and the system will tell you what’s consuming the power

The big user was WhatsApp, but I've had that on my phone for years and it's never been a problem.

I had, as someone said above, restarted my phone after day2 of stty battery life and that didn't work. I did it again yesterday - 'cos why not? - and that seems to have sorted it. It's after 1pm and I still have 94% from full overnight. I am relieved that I'm not off to the apple store for an £85 bumming and thankful for all your replies.

Now I'm going to get a haircut and then go book shopping with a budget of £85 saved. Man maths.

WhatsApp have very recently overhauled their app and pushed an update to all - that could absolutely be the likely culprit if there's bug impacting that model.

Why charge it every night if it still has 80% battery left?
