Behold! The new BBS aluminium race wheel!!
Discussion
Ben sent me these pics today. I hope he doesn't mind me sharing them with you. They show the new BBS race wheel, it isn't magnesium, but is said to be as light as the mag version, although the 2 look quite similar. They say the alumium one should be less brittle than the mag.

You can see that the spokes are smooth and don't have the texture of the mag. The bolts look different to me as well. I really like these wheels, I'll have to get some. He paid £2400 all in direct from BBS Motorsport, so a similar price to the mag. I shall need to rob a bank.

Can they be done so that the centre is mounted behind the rim as thats pretty ugly like that. Carnewal sell them too, and they are more than the mags, but dunno if thats better than going direct.
Bit disappointed how they look, but realise it could be a result of the offsets for that car etc.
I hear what you are saying Dan, but the look of the aluminium wheel is fine for me. I think the strength of the wheel more than offsets any problems with the look of it.
For reference, here is the slightly tidier design of the BBS racing mag:

Maybe its the pictures, but I saw a new set in flesh recently and think they look much better than the mag centres. When you see them for real the hollowed scooped out effect in the side of the spokes looks superb and obviously how they get the weight down. The mags are just flat on the sides of the spokes and suddenly look really dated when sat next to it.
You could get the mag centres mounted behind or infront of the rim, so they might do the same with these. I've run sets with both mounting styles and think they're much easier to maintain when the centre is mounted in front of the polished rim. It's very easy to repolish the outer rim without dismantling the wheel and having to get around / under all those bolt heads.

Do try to keep up Johnny
Ben had these on his car at the Brands festival,,,they look fantastic in the metal...to the point of jaw dropping set against theRiviera/Viagra blue paintwork.
The casting of the centres is smooth and seems easier to clean than the rough cast of the previous mag centres.
I would love a set of these,,,just got to try to find/justify the 2 grand cost from somewhere!

Oi clubsport! It takes time for word to travel this far oop north you know!
paulmc, how come the wheels are more difficult to maintain if the centres are mounted behind the rim? Or can someone else explain please? I think they look fine either way really. If the centres are behind the rim, then the appearance is "uncluttered". If the centre is mounted on top of the rim, then the appearance is more "technical". Either looks good.

Agree, the all silver wheel pictured is the ally one also. It's still mounted in front of the rim though not behind it. The black things are thread inserts in the ally centre and the bolt heads are behind the wheel.
I've edited my pics now paul to correct this. Mate, can you answer my question about looking after the wheels that I posted below please.
Yes. Maintaining meaning the appearance not dismantling and assembling. When the centre is mount in front of the polished outer there is a smooth edge all around where the centre meets the outer. Cleaning / polishing can be done very easily as you have no bolt heads to polish around.
When the centres are mounted behind the outer polished rim you have all the bolt heads directly on the polished rim. Cleaning off crap and polishing results in trying to get around all the bolt heads.
I'm not speculating here; I've currently got both different setup's and I'm just saying which set are far easier to keep looking good without a full strip down and re-polish.

That's what I wanted to know Paul, thanks.
It would appear that Ben's centres have a funny shape where they meet the rim, where each bolt is, that bit of the wheel bulges towards the outside. It doesn't seem to be like this on the mags?
Hello chaps,
The centre is mounted on the outside of the split rims due to the offset required for the standard RS set up. Comparing mine to the silver ally centred ones in the second Carnewal photo where the centre is also mounted on the outside..... I think the difference is to do with the thread inserts. Mine may well be a revised version which no longer requires the inserts ( the black bits )and could explain the slightly thicker semi-circular wave of material ....for want of better description
...where the bolts locate.
I reckon they are most definitely le chien's noisettes. Regards weight...can't tell you exactly but they are certainly ALOT lighter than the Speedlines.
I'm really pleased with them and as Clubsport mentioned they definitely go well with the viagra paint !
Cheers,
Ben.
Oh DanH..... and I thought you were a man of discerning taste coming from an elise...
...i used to have an S1 111s

...i used to have an S1 111slol Sorry. Just looking for a set of rims for my GT3 RS as I don't want to batter the factory ones on track (RRP 3k+vat) and I'm fairly picky. Need to get the centres painted blue too
Can't tell how these are done (Model RS-GT in mag 8.5" & 11) :
(er link probably won't work if you aren't rennlist registered - sorry).
Unrelated question - is the car in this post the same colour as the one below?

What's this colour called? I hated it when I first saw it a while ago. Now...it's really starting to grow on me...Never seen it in the flesh...

P.S. I like the wheels...!

I posted a topic in July extolling the virtues of the BBS aluminium race wheels which I had noticed at Le Mans.I have a full set waiting to be put on a car at the garage and promise you guys to take a set of scales along to weigh them as soon as I get chance.I would ideally like to post the comparison weight of the magnesium wheels which I am replacing at the same time although the logistics may be a bit difficult.Shall I start with the weight of the new ali wheels first?

Dan
I am also thinking about getting a set for my RS for next season. Some RS owners have painted them red or black to suit the car. Speaking to Parr - they tell me that the BBS LM wheel (I think the one that is being discussed here) is a road wheel and not guaranteed for competition work or racing. They will however guarantee the wheel for track days so long at it is not dismantled and painted (centre). Some of these wheels have had the split rim bolts come loose after hard track day work.
Cheers Jonathan
OK re-read posts and I think the race wheels are being discussed - not the LM. Anybody know what the difference is as the LM wheel is cheaper than the race wheels.

Hi Jonathan,
I reckon that the BBS race wheel looks nicer than the LM, and that would be enough for me! On the 996 GT3 RS, you would definitely need to paint the centres red or blue as gold or silver wheels don't look right on this car IMHO.
