I've been googling, and it seems it can be anything between a one, and three days. Has anyone any experience of how long it more usually takes, or should I not turn on the laptop til after the weekend?

Can take a few hours locally, but normally 48-72hours for worldwide propagation.

In my experience of almost weekly DNS changes, particularly lately (ask JamieBeeston...!), it varies wildly and there is no real way of saying a site will go live or change will appear to you at a certain point at all. You can reduce the time taken to propagate by taking you TTL down before you make the change, but this will also then need to propagate, so will need some planning. I've seen changes appear to me as quickly as four hours (while colleagues on different connections wait two days to see the same change) right up to the three day mark...

You'd think in this age of precision etc that it'd be more accurate, but I haven't worked out a better way yet

Thanks for your experiences guys.

Oh well, all I can do is sit tight. Mrs Philthy says I spend too much time on here anyway

It's actually entirely dependant on the SOA which is configured in the zone file. This tells servers how long to cache your DNS record. If it's set to a week, that's the maximum time to fully propagate, but in practice it'll take less than that for all but a few servers.

If you are making lots of DNS changes it's a good idea to reduce the value so that the propogation time is much lower.

heheh

Top quality kit, installing another server next week, dont like to get anywhere close to the servers being loaded

Nominet is fast with its updates, the slowest part is usually the ISPs DNS cache.

With .uk domains now, you can literally be up and running in 1 minute with full DNS propogation, WITH the right ISP (NTL is one of the slowest ehhe)

Glad you're enjoying it

Well DNS is a very strange animal. All worked fine for me last night, it has now reverted to its old state

It wont be the DNS itself, more likely your ISPs Proxy / Cache

Cable companies are the worst offenders here, specifically NTL.

The DNS is live to the world at present, and IS showing the correct details.

Thanks Jamie.

....is now the time to admit my ISP is talktalk actually, I sent them an email yesterday, aking them when they might be likely to update their DNS cache. Their response only took 24 hours...........and stated that they do it every 24 hours. How did that work then? I had it working last night, and not as I write this That's a rhetorical question by the way, I'm going on the sauce, and presumably so are you. On Monday who'll care?

If its still not working for you now, drop me a mail and I will give you ideas of things you can do to bypass your ISP.

NTL are by far the worst ISP I have ever come accross.

They cock my companies website up no end, I'm not going to say how as it is a security issue.

They are criminally bad for phone connections and the like as well.

I warned my mate before he got connected and guess what he now has a phone that he pays for and doesn't work.

Me? Fibbing?
No worries mate. Still a few hiccups, far beyond your control I'm sure. All in all mate, about as smooth as it could have been. I was particularly impressed with the way your staff corrected some cock ups I'd made without me knocking my head against a wall trying to find out what was going wrong. Give them a pay rise!
Seems to be excellent......
I'm not going to tempt fate by saying it is ..superstitious and all that.

Fondest regards

Crack that whip Jamie
I think I've used up my "stupid" allowance with your staff, top guys !
I'm not going to blow smoke up your arse, but they have done an excellent job.
Funny how you need to move somewhere to find out the difference.
