Definitely cutting it a bit fine, but a nicely executed glide approach nonetheless.

Bit itchy watching the distance between shadow and plane shrinking.

I saw this posted on X.

The poster was after a debate on what else the pilot might/should have done.

I think the pilot did what they could and made a landing.

Which I believe is called a ‘result’.

I saw it yesterday and thought it all looked okay…and then the hanger appeared!

Cessna 177s often seem to have undercarriage issues.

That big field off to the left at about 20 seconds must have looked awfully tempting. Scarily close to the hanger, especially having followed the road for a while.

Very well done to the pilot to keep a cool enough head to glide down especially through the buildings , the YouTube video appears to show the reporters over hamming the reporting.

I imagine he left the gear up on purpose to extend the glide. It adds a heap of drag.

The accident aircraft was a C210, not a C177 - and was initially, already gear and partial flaps down on the downwind leg when they lost power. When he turned towards the runway, he realised straight away he wouldn't be able to make it and cleaned it up to pick up as much energy as he could. Timely decision and (only just) managed to make it pay off. Very lucky.
They did actually brush the top of a Gum tree, and the pilot was quoted as saying something unrepeatable involving the Australian words for "backside", "puckered" and "whole seat cushion"
As relayed by a good friend of mine based at Bankstown...

I’d rather go through an aircraft emergency than listen to that newsreader’s awful voice again.
