Well spotted, Graham: I can't believe I haven't posted a Canute-esque tirade against the latest Schroder/Chirac fest.
"Hi, my Name's Tone and you can p1ss all over me!"
Dear oh dear, I honestly think this shamless anti-British politicisation by the Euroboys is incredible.
A French commentator on Newsnight more or less admitted that it was only Mrs.T's hard nosed bargaining that had secured the relevent rebate during the 80s but now, with a fundamentally weaker administration in No.10, it was time fro Brussels to get that well and truly revoked.
How much behavioural evidence does one need to accept the folly of this grand design?

Anyone hear that French MP on the radio talking about the deal Germany & France did before TB got to Brussels ? Quote was something along the lines of:
"I think this is simply going back to the original model of France and Germany ruling Europe together"
It's official. They've admitted it. Just about sums it up really.

It's ridiculous, why don't they just leave it as it is, we already have the poxy Euro which nearly everyone didn't want and why the hell do they want to UNITE us all, we're British and D
k Head Blair want's to try and be like Bush so thinks we should copy the Americans! FFS the EU isn't made up of states it's made of countries! LEAVE IT THAT WAY!

Probably quoting badly again but I read somewhere very recently, btw 'recently' for me means that it could have been within the last hour or 3 days
.
As it stands today the UK pays in the region of three times as much into the EU than France does and if they hack the rebate, which the fire breathing Maggie won, it could go up to thirteen times as much
.
Nice wine btw, can't comment on the rest of the country though
.

Is it me or the loosers from the last bash still trying to be king of the hill, but by a different route.
Or are they trying to compete with USA.
Being a complete numpty in the ways of Europe and the dealings going on I have no idea how the Euro affects me. I have no idea why this should affect me.
All I seem to get is its good for you so shut up!
I work, I pay taxes and then I have to pay taxes on savings?
This country has a rich history.
It has resisted a lot in its past.
We were robbed at Hastings but that was esentially a Viking branch of Frenchies.
After that though, all Britain approach, newcommers accepted :.putyoutotheswordifyoudontlikeus:
Then have to put up with several attempts of invasion by papal endorsed types, Drake saw them off etc.
Some geezer called Napoleon.
A git called Hitler.
And now we are told to shut up once again and accept it.

Having lived on the "Continent" now for almost 30 years I can only confirm the theory that it's a Franco-Germanic Alliance against the "put-downs" they've suffered at the hands of the English (note English and not Brit!)
I'm a Brit and proud of it and would not give up my nationality for a European one at any time.
It's just Bullshit to believe however that the numpties in Brussels are ever going to let that drop as the majority are unelected, therefore unaccountable, therefore more power-hungry than any normal government scrote will ever be. They're living on the high hog at our expense and want to line their nests even more at the expense of the "plebs". Actual words heard in Brussels (in this case in French) while eating out!
The answer? Oppose at every turn the expansion to a pan-european state, the motto/car Sticker as follows
U.S.E. No use!

Yes, I must confess I would like to be able to get that f
treaty of rome repealed and get us out of Europe. They all hate us and are upset that we are better than them, so they want our money, and our land, small as it is. I am a tad biased.
I also greatly resent the intrusion by the UNELECTED members. We live in a Democracy, and we vote for who we want to Govern us, so if we do not vote for these unnaccountable ars
I fail to see why we should obey anything they say.
In case you are not sure, to clarify, I am not pro-euro.....

Remember all this the next time you hear our Tony pontificating about "Britain at the heart of Europe" and "Britain having real influence in Europe by working with our partners" and " There is no agenda for a European superstate, its all just the Tories being xenophobic anti European little Englanders" and "It's in Britains best interests" and "Five economic tests....." etc etc.
The one truly good thing you can say about the Europeans in that they are very clear and honest and open about their ambitions for the USE.
They want:
One Currency
One Passport
One interest rate
One Government
One Army
One foreign policy
Centralised reserves
One executive
One President.
In short they want ONE COUNTRY. Why can't Blair just be man enough to admit this to the British people, instead of all this crap about "British influence" etc?
Maybe it's because he knows what the reaction might be, and that would seriously endanger his "President of the USE ambitions".
Having travelled extensively in the USA over the last 10 years I can say there is thing in favour of closer ties to the the Yanks: They LOVE the Brits, they don't have any chips on their shoulders about having to be rescued twice in recent years (french) or having their arses kicked (Germans) by us. They are interested in our History, respect our democratic principals, love our Royal family, genuinely value us as freinds, share our language, respect our military,
and are NOT looking to subsume us into an icky sticky morass of Eurobabble nonsense.

Andymadmak - articulate passion of the first order! Bloody well said - I violently agree.
It was interesting to watch this issue being discussed on C4 News last night: you had a UKIP MEP present, along with a regular Grauniad columnist and an usually well spoken chappie from The Sun.
Fascinating to hear the clear, logical and precise point by point dissemination of the real Euro Convention's agenda and the seemingly irrefutable nature of such factors.
Equally compelling was the vague, unspecific blabber from Captain Gonad whose only riposte was the oft trotted out jibber jabber about "that's the way it's going and in other parts of the world too [federalising, that is], so why resist it?"
Holy sh1t, Batman - was I hearing right? Damn sure I was!
And this is where the experience of JMGS4 is so critically significant (a point strongly echoed by the chap from The Sun) - that our own politicians are simply avoiding the truth of what is so openly assumed and discussed on mainland Europe: OVERALL SOCIO-ECONOMIC & POLITICAL UNIFICATION, as has been detailed above by Andy into the aforementioned categories.
Note also the open discussion in the media of a President - even suggestion of the previously dismissed (with a brief quaff and wave of the hand by him and his accolytes) contendership of good old Phoney. The truth will out...and it is doing...
Ladies and gentlemen: to hell with moderation and calls of paranoia. We are undergoing a political seige the likes of which stands comparison with anything militaristic this nation has previously faced.
The challenge is the hearts and minds of a people and the prize is our very freedom. Do not think otherwise.
The comments by my fellow PHers above regarding European distate - if not outright contempt - for Blighty, particularly from France and Germany, based on various factors including no small amount of jealousy for the success we have had in (one way or another) defending and developing our island's constitution for a thousand years, is at the very core of the matter.
The thought of surrendering what so many of my ancestors died to protect on the sanctimonious say so of some centre-left free loader in the Europarl makes me
Let us hope the years of political correction which have debased our country and weakened our resolve in so many other arenas does not ruin our last vestige of potential distinction, justice and liberty.

CarZee said: Do you ever wonder if this whole liberal/PC 'ashamed to be English' business is merely part of the drive to persuade us to abandon our national heritage, traditions and democratic processes to this bunch of burocratic maniacs?
This is precisely why it's occurring, Masser.
Does anyone really think that if the French were geographically transposed onto this realm they would surrender with the vigour with which they intone [no pun, I assure you] us?
Bonneparte must be having a real giggle, je pense.

...and assaulting a princess of the realm I believe.
News like this initially angered me, but now it merely saddens me greatly. It appears that a very very small amount of people actually care for this green and pleasant land and the rest of them are happy in their ambivalence to watch Tony dilute its history and its values into a mish mash melting pot of everthing bad thats doomed for failure before it even starts.
Combining Europe into one huge corporation of countries is going to be so plauged with bureacracy that any benefit will be lost in the quagmire of keeping everyone happy.
I grew up in a great country goddamit and I'll be fcuked if I am to take this bollocks lying down.
We gave the world almost everything they have today and for that we should be rewarded, not integrated.
