Bring a Boxster back from Germany

A friend of mine who has been living in Germany for 12 months bought a Boxster in Germany about 10 months ago and is now coming back to live in the UK with the car.

Does anyone know the implications of bringing the car back to the UK as far as Import taxes and registration etc are concerned ??

Is it correct that if you have owned the car for 6 or more months then you do not have to pay import duty ?

Go to the DVLA homepage and download the PDF file on "How to import a vehicle into the UK". This will guide you through it and it is simple.

There is no import duty on any car if it is brought from one EU country to another, whether the car is new or second hand. The only difference with a new car i sthat you have to pay the VAT in the UK. You will of course get the VAT paid in the source EU country refunded.

I think after 6 months the car is no longer considered new and there's no VAT transaction involved; he's just bringing personal property.

In order to register it he'll need a certificate of conformity from Porsche Cars GB to verify that the car was built to EU regs. Cost is £60+VAT or thereabouts.

The rest is just paperwork at the local vehicle registration office. As new as it is most UK insurers will ask for a Thatcham Cat 1 system; assuming the car has the factory fitted alarm (an option in Germany I think) he'll probably need some support from Porsche UK to show the systems is the same or equivalent.

Future resale in the UK will be affected. I think there's some degree of demand in the UK for LHD 964's and 993's but probably very little for the watercooled 986, 996 and onwards. If it's a long term import comparing UK and D prices might be a good idea to confirm it's the right thing to do.

Anyone care to hazzard a guess at what this car would be worth on the UK market ?

LHD Boxster 2.7 2000, black with black leather, tiptronic, lux pack, full Porsche main dealer history, 69000 kms, excellant condition.

I guess tiptronic is worth less than manual ?

14-15k for a fast sale,17k if you dont want the phone to ring,i agree with the comments made above lhd is a slow burner with water cooled porsches with the exception of the GT3. I paid 35k for my C2 at the time same uk speck cars were selling for 48k,as long as you p/x for lhd again you will do ok,if not expect a slow sell,or selling for silly money,you cant have it both ways if you buy cheap expect to sell cheap keep that in mind and you wont be dissapointed
