So this bloke walks into the road…
Discussion
Took a left corner.. guy a few feet away steps off the pavement without looking into my path, he glances around and sees me approaching.
Naturally I brake and shift right to create space and go around him expecting him to stop walkng (which is what usually happens in these circumstances - emergency stop didn't seem warranted given he's observed me)
HE CARRIES ON WALKING!
I brake more and shift back into my lane and he's my right as I pass (gesturing in frustration "It's a road mate!") and drive on...
So no harm done no one was injured, however it happened right in front of a police station..
Did I do anything technically wrong? I can't believe it's correct to make an emergency stop every time some plonker steps out without looking.. but plod may have observed this on CCTV etc am I likely to get a knock or anything?

If he was already waiting or had stepped into the road before you turned into it, it’s on you, as he was on one road, you were on another.
If you had already turned into it, it’s on him.
Clarified in the latest HC update insofar as at a junction you should give way to pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross a road into which or from which you are turning.

Sadly, the law has changed and we can argue all we want and even post dashcams but I suspect as a motorist, you will be bummed in the dock if you had hit him.
As a ped, I will see other peds in front of me just cross a side road/T junction without looking, assuming any other road user will look after them. Mental. It's not a great way of training future generations to think - you know, that phrase "being the rightest person in the graveyard".

To be fair, that cuts both ways. Some fAs a ped, I will see other peds in front of me just cross a side road/T junction without looking, assuming any other road user will look after them. Mental. kwits won't look out for others. The law change just puts the onus on the person in charge of the large, potentially lethal, lump of metal to be more mindful of others...Nigel Foster said:

Op turns left, pedestrian steps into road a few feet in front of him. Op moves right, pedestrian keeps on walking. Next thing, op moves 'back into his lane' and pedestrian is 'on his right'. So the pedestrian that was only a few feet away when he stepped into the road managed to cross all the way in front of the car, without the car stopping.
We won't be hearing from the op again.

You would think, the bigger and heavier the vehicle, the more priority you should give it.

The law doesn't change, but the MUST statements in the Highway Code are the basis for Due Care and Attention, are they not?https://www.gov.uk/government/news/the-highway-cod...

Where does that end? The bigger the vehicle you have, the more responsibility you have.Bill said:

Where does that end? The bigger the vehicle you have, the more responsibility you have. It's all about common sense. How many cyclists are in graveyards thinking they were in the right compared to the car driver?

Corner or junction? I'm assuming junction and you missed umpteen thousand mentions of the Highway code.
Please read it again and become a better driver.
I turned the corner OF a junction after the lights turned green (thus accelerating to make progress) - the pedestrian stepped out not AT the junction, but a few yards down the road. Please read it again and become a better driver.
Are you making any assumptions about my driving ability? 30+ years NCB without any at-fault claim!

And in the meantime, if there's a vulnerable road user in the road then just stop.
What, so just come to a complete stop every time somebody walks into the road without looking first? That seems ridiculously frankly.
You don't think he should've stopped trying to cross the road once he saw me?
As has happened thousands of times in my driving experience?

Yep. But it's still on the person in the car to be mindful of the vulnerable. It's all about common sense. How many cyclists are in graveyards thinking they were in the right compared to the car driver?
