Good morning,

A fortnight ago I sold my Mini Cooper S to carwow (a great experience to be fair). I got £750 less than I thought I would for the car but that’s the way cars go and carwows dealer bid was the highest.

I am now looking for a replacement vehicle. Originally I had my heart set on a BMW 5 series F10/F11 but the ones within my budget are high mileage and there seems to be loads of categorised cars about.

I want to explore some other options and have a criteria. I do not like Vauxhalls

- 5 door vehicle this time (the reason why I sold the mini)
- budget of upto £7000
- ULEZ compliant
- something that I could run for many years ideally not losing too much money (I had took a £3750 loss on my mini).

What would you recommend ? I’d consider cars upto 120k miles on the clock as long as they have good history’s and are not on the register.

Out of interest, how long did you run your mini for?

Ie £3750 over 3 years isn't bad, but 6 months quite a lot.

Whilst I'm no expert, it seems obvious that things like BMW's are going to be worse value than humdrum cars like fords.

Korean stuff has established itself in the mainstream sector. Japanese petrol seems to retain the reliability crown on here.

I ran the Mini for 15 months. £250 a month in depreciation

I have noticed BMW 430d grand coupe's seem like decent value.

Not a gutless as you might think. They don't weigh too much..

We bought this at the weekend.

It's an auto with only 11k on the clock and was considerably more cash than the 2 manual ones above

They are very nippy.

Friend used to have a 12 plate.

How's the mpg? Friend sold it as was only getting late teens/early 20's

No idea. When I got home I started going through the menus on the central control unit, and eventually found a fuel consumption record. Since last reset was showing 25 mpg. Given it took me a little time to find the screen, I'm guessing that is every single mile of the 11k on the clock, and it's never been reset. 11k over 4 and a half years suggests it rarely got warm, and did lots of short journeys in a town.
Will look again when it needs it's first fill up. I did 25 miles from picking it up and then I put £40 of E5 in it, and the range went from 38 to 401 miles, which suggests it might be okay.

Thanks for the responses.

I seem to not be sure at all about what car to go for. Perhaps I should explore the world of bangernomics again. I did it years ago with a Fiesta Finesse.

Reckon that would be good ? Would be a VAG tdi

You sold to trade, but how did you buy? If bought from a dealer then £2-3K of that loss was their profit when you bought it.
