Heard one of the guys in the 24hr race at Silverstone had to add some silencer cans to his M3 to get pass the noise regs..
Apparently the resulting increase in back pressure blew out the rings during qualifying.. engine never made it to the race.!

Well, it was a nightmare day for us. Despite a new exhaust system, we failed scrutineering for noise, so fitted two 400bhp supertraps - and passed. The supertraps however caused so much back pressure that the engine oil rings went in morning practice, and then we lost a piston in qualifying. Our 2.10 lap was with the driver coasting down the pit straight before the car finally died!!
We REPLACED THE ENGINE!!!! Yep, before night qualifying (well, we missed twenty minutes of it) - only to have the session stopped due to the storm.
Car is raring to go, we are only 23rd which isn't where we should be, but the car is far quicker now with new additional silencers and no supertraps!!! What a huge effort by the team, including working till 5am this morning to finish things off. Hats off to Simpson Motorsport. I am gonna have my brekkie and get back to the circuit
Fingers crossed!!!!

i must admit i cant see it making much difference, its not like adding a silencer, its very thin walled pipe thats inserted.

A difference in back pressure, alters the pressure helping the valves close.
If you take the catts out, you have a new chip, if you get a sports exhuast fitted, TVR replace the chip.
There is a reason for this, its to do with the back pressure, gas flow and injector rating for fuel
