How do I get a plain background instead of the grey/white checker pattern? (feeling pretty stupid right now)

Martin.

Are you creating the pdf in Photoshop or from Acrobat Distiller? What is the original colour of your background? What type of file are you distilling or converting? The fact that you state 'grey/white checker' suggests that you are in Photoshop. Don't feel silly! Repro is a minefield

If you're creating it in Photoshop (I'm using P7) using the File->New... dialogue box then at the bottom of the box there are three radio buttons for White Background or Transparent. I suspect you have it set on transparent and need to change to something else.

Bump!...

pdf files are automatically opened in PS on my 'puter, and appear with the grey/white check background which is all but impossible to read. How do I get a plain white b/g once the file has been opened in PS?

Martin.

yeah, the simplest way (and quicker than opening PS every time) would be to associate *.pdf files with Acrobat Reader (via windows explorer > file types).

I think that will get you what you're after!

As Tony says, it is always best to open pdf files in Acrobat Reader. I am almost certain that you can download it for free. It is best to view them in this application as Photoshop will convert the images to pixels which, for repro purposes, is something that should be avoided.

I think that I misunderstood your original question. I thought that you were trying to generate pdf files from an application such as QuarkXpress.
