My A class is two years old and due a a service. Main dealer charges £550 and a good independent near me is £290.

How much does not having a main dealer service history knock off the sale of a car?

MD servicing makes a car easier to sell, even if it's no more valuable.

Plus, you have better comeback if there's a problem, and I get a year's breakdown cover free with each annual service, which is worth somethinf in itself.

When are you planning to sell it?

If you're selling it within the (3 year?) warranty, then yes I'd think that maintaining a franchised dealer service history would make a difference.

If you're keeping it for ten years, then no-one will expect or really care about it either way on a ten year old car.

I always intend to keep them a while but then get that itch to move in to something else. So there's a good chance it'll be sold within the next 2 years

If the main dealer offers good service and the sacrifice is only a matter of the extra £260, then for a car I'm likely to sell at 3 or 4 years old, I'd say it's worth it.

If the main dealer is a complete nightmare to deal with as many are, I'd go independent anyway wink

If you go independent make sure the service is to manufacturers spec and the receipt states that and materials listed on the invoice can be proven as meeting manufacturers spec.

This is a just in case a warranty claim arises and the dealer tries to say it wasn't serviced properly and refuse the claim.

That said I did exactly what the OP is thinking and serviced car out of dealer network, chucked the car into the dealer just before the 3 year new car warranty expired to deal with some issues, they never mentioned the non-dealer service and tried to fix everything. Not sure if there was a claim for something possibily impacted by servicing it would have been so simple.

Depends what you mean by "sell it"...

Whether main dealer or independent makes no odds whatsoever to trade sales or values... they just care about a stamp on time and on mileage interval. It's a tick box, nothing more.

But if you're going to sell privately, I'd say a dealer stamp at 2 years old is worth the extra dosh.

The OP's car is 2 years old. Every MB comes with 3 years roadside assistance.
