Quick insurance question for older driver
Discussion
Hi all,
Father in law, who is 88, with a perfect driving record, has a year old new Corsa which has done 500 miles, so he hardly uses it, has just had his low mileage renewal through.
It says, sorry we can't quote you has you no longer meet our underwriting criteria.
No problem, he will have to get another quote elsewhere.
The question is, the proposal will probably say "Have you ever been refused, declined, had special terms imposed etc, etc"
I take it he would have to say declined, otherwise he would be committing an offence, and they would not pay out in the event of a claim.
Of course, that's not to say another company would not accept him, just because one has declined.
Am I correct?

I wouldn’t bother declaring that. They’ve just declined a renewal quote based on their own blanket criteria. Not the same thing as declining cover for any policyholder specific reason.
Imagine how many declined to quote results get filtered out of the comparison sites. If those all had to be declared we’d never get to the end of a proposal.

Thanks for that, but he needs to cover all bases to be 100% sure, not 90%.Imagine how many declined to quote results get filtered out of the comparison sites. If those all had to be declared we’d never get to the end of a proposal.
His late sister still drove at 94. (Limited mileage, it cost about 2k)
When Mum was 88 in 2010 her renewal on a 10 year old 1,300cc Fiesta came through at over £500!
I couldn't find anyone else who would quote for someone her age, and actually her driving wasn't that great by then.
So when she realised she was paying over £1 a mile for tax and insurance she reluctantly agreed to part with her car and just use cabs as it would be cheaper, although in reality much of the time I was her taxi service!
Anyway I wouldn't declare it as being declined - and good luck.

The Insurer has " simply " declined to quote so your FIL is perfectly safe in not saying this.Father in law, who is 88, with a perfect driving record, has a year old new Corsa which has done 500 miles, so he hardly uses it, has just had his low mileage renewal through.

Rather than continue the worry using a comparison site it might be better to use a local Insurance Broker to do all the work.
Howdens have various branches ( the old A Plan ) who are usually pretty good.

That was my feeling too.
His quote last year was £412,
Just a quick check on comparison sites now seem to be £900 plus.
The thing is, he lives two miles away from us, and only uses the car to go to Tesco or Aldi three miles away.
If it was me, I would sell the car and just use taxis at a fiver a trip as and when, but I do appreciate it's nice to have that independence.

Quite agree.Had exactly this debate with my Mother a few years ago when she turned 83 and being in the car with her was enough to convince me she shouldn't be driving. She still moans about the cost of taxi's !That was my feeling too.

On the other hand my FIL turned 91 this year and to treat himself bought a " new " X3.
He admits he is getting older and says he has slowed down a bit but in reality would never give up that independence as you say.

So, been down to my local friendly broker, in business 60 years, cheapest they could come up with was £1830! wtf!
Comparison sites coming in around £900 for 1000 miles pa.
Compared to his £400 odd last year and even comparison sites , wow !Comparison sites coming in around £900 for 1000 miles pa.
Definitely give Howdens a call -I can't recall which of their offices is supposedly the best at Motor but think its Thatcham although presumably also worth a quick look at their website to perhaps find one closer to you.
If you can't beat that £900 then at the very least you can then make a decision.
