Apple Gift Card - possible fraud

I'm not sure if this is the right area to post this, but was interested to see if anyone else has had anything similar.
I received a £40 Apple Gift Card last year as part of a Black Friday promotion.
When I finally got around to trying to use it today, I had forgotten the Gift Card reference, so called Apple.
Apple told me that the Gift Card had been redeemed on a completely different Apple account, but that they are not at liberty to give me any further details on when/where/who has done so.
I spoke to a few different people at Apple who all gave me slightly different versions of the same story before I gave up and contacted my credit card company instead.
Has anyone else has this problem and managed to get it resolved?
