£10-15k EV Choices - Page 1 - Car Buying

We are considering replacing our second car (petrol Twingo) with a reasonably new EV.
It doesn’t need a huge range, but would do all the sub 10 mile journeys and some longer drives (130-140 mile round trip). No need for anything particularly high powered or large, but something either particularly smooth or a bit fun to drive would be nice. That said this is very much “white goods motoring”.

There’s a decent selection of 3 year old cars with 10-20k miles between £10-15k, but what are the ones to consider or avoid?

I suspect charging at the destination is unlikely, or at least unlikely to be guaranteed.

Wherever there is a standard 3 pin plug then there is charging. Not fast, but its a charging option.

When it’s visiting a family member in rented accommodation with no off-street parking it’s not something I’d want to rely on.

Another scenario is going to places like National Trust houses & gardens where it’s uncommon.

We still have a petrol car so can always use that or stop en-route for a top up, but I’d be trying to avoid this.

We bought one of these about a year ago. I think it is excellent. Decent range for a cheap EV (says 180, so I would guess about 150 miles but never really tested it) nice interior, all the gadgets, very, very smooth to drive and remarkably nippy from standstill. Perfect town car.

We bought a 42kWh i3S 15 months ago - 2019 car with 50k miles. We've done over 12k miles since, it's averaged 4.3mi/kWh (overall) in that time.
We both love it and would wholeheartedly recommend. Didn't get lower than 120 miles range in winter and I've achieved a real-world over 200 miles range last week...

Hate to admit it, but I think an early tesla Model 3 will fit the bill.
It lacks imagination choice wise.

But it is rear wheel drive, quite a good steer as far as EVs go and then when you occasionally do longer drives it is backed up by the Tesla supercharger network.

Sub 15k is now easily doable

There are indeed £15k Teslas, but I don’t think I’d want to run a 100k mile launch Model 3. That feels like quite a gamble.

For what we would just it for, a 2 year old Peugeot e208 or a Hyundai still under warranty seems the better option.

No one mentions the Mazda MX30 in these threads, is it that bad?

They’re down to £11k for a 2021 car now, which seems like a total bargain in this day and age.

The range on them is dire. 80 miles isn’t uncommon, which essentially makes them not much better than a good PHEV, which isn’t a good position for a full EV of that size!

My money would be on an i3 or i3S at this budget.

Another vote for the BMW i3S. Get the non range extender big battery. Aim for 2019 on if you can. Easily the best small EV to drive. Great interior.

Very efficient for urban use, but if you want to do long motorway drives in it, there are superior choices at your price point.
