Genesis confirms GV60 Magma for 2025

Like an Ioniq 5N, but want more orange? The GV60 might be that car

We’d let you off not knowing much about the Magma Genesis models. Yes, there’s a ring taxi, and yes, there’s some tasty hardware in a few of the cars, but with vague promises and nothing much beyond show cars, it’s been hard to build up much enthusiasm. Now, however, the hotted-up Magma Gensises (pun intended) are going to be a real thing, starting with the GV60 Magma. 

Set to go on sale in Europe at the end of next year, the first Genesis Magma ‘elevates the design and performance of the GV60’ with more power as well as chassis and aero mods. It’s obviously quite a bit lower and wider than standard, which is always a good sign for a fast one. Genesis reckons the new suspension mods have been ‘thoughtfully engineered to elevate overall performance and provide an unmatched driving sensation exclusive to Magma vehicles.’ They certainly make it look much more hot hatchy than the regular SUV - again encouraging. Let’s not forget, either, that the GV60 is built on the same E-GMP EV architecture as the Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5, cars that have become the very good 585hp GT and fantastic 650hp 5N respectively. At the moment, it seems like one of the best toolkits to build a flagship, driver-focused EV from. So don’t dismiss the Magma as merely an orange SUV just yet. 

Eventually there will be a Magma of every model in the range, says Genesis, improving the looks and the drive. They will be based on three pillars of ‘Unspoken Dominance’ (making them look cool), ‘Captivating Control’ (making them engaging to drive) and Sharpened Immersion (making them nice to be in). For the GV60 Magma, that latter point is going to mean its own EV soundtrack as well as a bespoke driver interface for occupants to ‘fully immerse themselves in the thrilling journey ahead.’ Maybe a gimmick, yes, but the Ioniq 5N has shown that the silly stuff can exist with a properly gratifying drive. And this is just the start, remember, with petrol-powered Genesis models likely lined up for Magmafication if the concepts are anything to go by - let’s hope for a proper M3 rival from the G70, for example.

I actually really like the look of this, at least in the photos. I expect when you see it in the flesh you'll realise it's actually the size of a small house and quite podgy like the EV6/Ioniq 5

There’s one quite close to me that I see a few times a week.

In person, it’s the least convincing of the three, and has a slight amphibious quality, not unlike a NC MX5 that has been over inflated.

I suspect the more aggressive body kit will square it off and help with the looks.

How long before Genesis does an Infiniti and pulls out of the UK/European market?

You hardly see any on the road, EV or otherwise, and I doubt the introduction of an £80k 'Hot Hatch' EV will change that.

Hope not… we have a few Genesis cars at work and they’re brilliant. I worked at Toyota prior to this role and I dare say the Genesis cars are better put together than the Lexus’.

Second that. My son has a GV60. It’s an extremely quiet and comfortable way to travel and everything is very well screwed together.

The 3 door shape isn't half bad, you wouldn't lose your tango orange GV60 in a packed car park, personally would have something a bit more discreet in colour,
The banks of LED lights look like a cheap diamonique engagement ring from Ratners.
It's not an SUV so that's a plus, be interesting to see how it drives and what the pricing will be.

Our rental car at the moment here in the US is a Genesis GV80 and honestly think it’s a brilliant but of kit that is really well put together.

Hopefully Genesis makes more of a push in the U.K I’d certainly consider one.

Looks great. I really enjoyed the genesis I test drove. As others have said really nicely put together and lovely inside.

But my god are they expensive, gv60 sport + is already £68k without any options so lord knows how much a hot version will be.
Now I know cars are just more expensive nowadays but £70k+ for a mid size family car is just bonkers when I can buy a similar sized MG4 with similar performance for half of that.
