Where are all these much rumored Ferraris? I have yet to see a single one in two years. Of course being in Dunedin probably has a small amount to do with that.

I also hear that NZ has more Porsches per capita than any country (unless you happen to count California as a country).

Just the one ?

Got a pic of a new silver-ish/pewter-ish DB9 across the road from my office today.

I think it's probably because over in NZ cars are a big status symbol and they don't come any bigger in terms of status than Ferraris. I think in america where it's much easier to buy domestic than exotic and europe where everythign's so damned expensive, I think Ferraris actually don't end up being (comparatively) that bad value for money for those who have "made it".

I'd never own a fezza or a porker, no interest in them... probably wouldn't own a Lambo. If I was going to go Italian I'd either go for a Miura or go for a Mangusta or Pantera..... or (if I could find one) an Iso Griffo

It was an interesting little report on Close-up, honestly I never would have thought. But then, it's not often you can drive through Newmarket / Parnell and fail to see a 360/355/550. And never was I so relieved as when I saw the Enzo. Was greeted with derision when I suggested to my mates that I had seen one (albeit fleetingly) in Auckland - well who's laughing now?! *enters one-upmanship mode*

I was wondering about exotics in NZ as I will be driving round the country for about 6 weeks in and around christmas when I am travelling.
Are there any places that I should visit from a car point of view and am I likely to see any sporting vehicles out on the roads?

Ben, you'll be wanting to check out this place for sure: www.southward.org.nz/ It's one of the bigger museum car collections in this hemisphere (maybe even the world)

On the road you'll probably see a LOT less of the Brit exotics (FAR less Lotuses, TVRs Nobles etc) You'll see many less of the Euro exotics, but for the size of the population you'll probably see a similar proportion of Ferraris and Porsches. What you WILL see is WAY more SUVs and WAY WAY WAY more Japanese exotica... you'll see Evos, WRX Imprezas, Turbo Skylines and Supras with such alarming regularity you'll think you're in japan.... we're the world's biggest dumping ground for jap performance imports.

At last count (about a year ago) There were 4 Ferraris in dunedin
A 512, 550, 550 barchetta and cant remember the other one. Probably lots more in central otago.

There stuff all decent exotics in Dunedin as its full of students. I lived there 8 years and saw about 3 lotus's (plus a couple of seven replicas)a couple of ferraris and thats about it. (Exluding the SFOS which dont count as very few of them are local cars)

That’s quite astounding actually, I’m surprised Italy or Monaco doesn’t have a higher ratio though.

Any particular Ferrari in mind when you commented that you want one? I noticed there was an Enzo for sale in the states, just hope my lucky numbers come up for the lottery.

my flatmates boss owns the 550 barchetta, I've also talked to a guy who's currently getting a 308 (IIRC) certified (imported it)and I saw a red F360 last year sometime giving it some beans up one of the hills...sounded absolutely beautiful....

seen a few porkers round the place too from time to time.

Don't think it is that suprising that there are so many Ferraris relative to the population. Monaco has the highest population density on earth by a mile and Italy has some of the poorest regions in the (pre 2004 anyway) European Union in the north of the country!
I will look at the museum mentioned above and hopefully see some nice cars! Cheers

Of course Always loved and perhaps one day a 1992 512TR The hard lined angles and curves I love the most. I have seen a beautiful black one around, but mainly red with tan interior. You can't beat the the sound of them. My fav when your following one and and they floor it entering a tunnel or underpass, the notes are music I am afraid its something about that F1 sounding motor which does it for most people.

There's a shed-load of prancing ponies around here (Newmarket). Last week in the space of two blocks I saw no fewer than three being driven, including one knob in a 348 (one of the worst dobbins ever made by all accounts) driving the entire road in 1st so it sounded as loud as possible!

There's also an Aston DB9 owned by someone local as it's regularly parked in Carlton Gore or Kingdon street. I'd have that over a Ferrari any day.

I suspect if you never ventured into Auckland you'd be lucky to see a Ferrari or Lambo in NZ. Porkers are everywhere and are overpriced in NZ. They're only glorified Audis anyway! (GT3 aside of course!).

Ah, a fine choice Kylie...great looking car and one of the great Fezza engines.

I had the good fortune to get a drive in a Tesstarossa a few years back, and that big flat 12 working away just behind your ear is music indeed

BTW, I see loads of Porkers around Welly, including several 944 turbos, but no Ferraris to date.

Jamie, I'll go along with that... and I know what you mean... around here most of the Ferraris "cruise" at 50km/h in first or second gear.... mind you if the Elise sounded that good I'd be doing the same :P

Wedgepilot you lucky lucky B I have only passengered in V8 Fezza clangers which am afraid I thought were a pile of old nastys.

I know they would cost a damn fortune to fix and maintain, plus the build quality is very average too. But I don't care Its still on the wish list.

Maybe the F-word engines are like bike engines and have no torque at the bottom end.

My cousin has a 308 GTB, yet to blag a ride off him thou. I'd refer to get a ride in one of his 2 Forumla Fords.

Graham Chapman in chch is prolly responsible for 1/2 the 'raris in the country, He's got a Dino and a 360 convertible (which sounds AWESOME up the Port Hills), but I think he's got a couple others as well.
Not to mention the F40 in Fazazz.

Not a huge fan of 'raris myself, but there is one I would lvoe to own.

288 GTO

MUHAHA

Would deffo need a $15mil Powerball win to get one of those!
