At some point in the not too distant future, I’m going to need a rebuild of my C4 964’s engine.

I’ve had a quote from the company that services the car and it’s come in at £14k. Before I spit my tea out in surprise, I wanted to validate other people’s experiences and who they would recommend contacting for further quotes.

Matt at Fearnsport is the best. Check with him.

Thats not bad. All may be similar. 9e, Northway, JZM, Tuthill, Parr, Porsche Torque, 911 Virgin, Sport and Classic, Richard Chamberlain, Ninemeister (9m), Unit 11, Headshop UK Ltd.

Ring around be interesting to hear feedback amongst these indies. I had a 993 with a 9m engine built to RS spec. Fabulous but not cheap!

UK has a number of very good engine builders. Apologies if I've missed any.

Sounds about right and will likely creep up when you look at options and they find other issues. It's an expensive hobby.

Not all rebuilds are the same so its important to understand what exactly will be replaced and what may need to be replaced if worn out. Tinware, head studs, valve guides, chains and guides should normally be changed but clutch and flywheel, cylinders and barrels may also be needed and this is where costs can escalate. John at Unit 11 in Warrington did my engine and is always sensible on ££

That will be a starting point probably. Once the engine is tripped down other work will be revealed either machining or replacement parts. Each job is different so the £14k will only be a ball park.

Where are you based? There are quite a few places that will get recommendations. I would add Wrightune to the list above.

Thanks all, will make a few calls next week and see what I can find out. Am on the Surrey/Hampshire border, so quite a few specialists around here to try.

Be prepared for the whilst I’m in there I may as well…..
I’d be preparing my self for a 20k bill and be happy with anything less.

Sounds similar to the most expensive phrase uttered during a building project - “Can you just …” Last time I uttered that sentence it cost me 10 grand 😂

Steve Winter at Jazz Porsche worth a call too. He's very good on air cooled.

Don't rush to get the cheque book out. My 118'000 mile car had the engine removed and inspected but all was well within tolerance so just put back together with some new gaskets, seals and tinware! These engines can do big mileages if regularly serviced.

This would be my suggestion as well, but he's not doing the full on engine thing any more as Redtek.
