Pending our house move I am looking at building a large walk in wardrobe from pax.

Anyone done this?

Room is about 4x3m. So plan would be to do both walls, one side for me and one for mrs and try and put an island dresser in the middle.

The Ikea site is quite good for 3d model. Anyone who has done it found any issues along the way? I have heard pax 2.0 is due to launch soon?

I've had my IKEA wardrobe in our dressing room which is next to our open-plan ensuite for nearly 12 years now and it's still perfectly fine. I had a local company pop by and told me it'll be expensive what I was asking for, he was asked to leave, and we also had a chap turn up from whoever dumped bedroom stuff in Paul Simon's curtain superstore.. Hammonds maybe, he even printed off a design for me, and we heard nothing from him, i used the van that I moved myself into the house to go to the local IKEA and bought it all.

I've had no issue with them except on the shelves which are full width sometimes sag if overloaded.

Completely configurable & you can change anytime yourself I'd have a Pax over any of the custom fitters as they're value for money. You can box them in to give it a more premium feel if that's what you want.

We did it for ours and it’s perfect. Book an appointment at Ikea and they will design it for you at no cost. We didn’t and I wish we had as we’ve just been to one of their designers for our utility room and they were excellent.

Used quite a few and always been impressed by them.
I just took the measurements to store and took a look at the various displays on offer, something will stand out.

If it’s the stuff I’m thinking of, the main side panels are hollow.

They do seem to be fairly robust but just something to be careful of.

We were quoted 6K for are walk in wardrobe set up. Got all the IKEA stuff for about 2K. Still fine after about 5 years. Slight sag on the top horizontal as I was using them as a shelf. I also got them delivered as there was no way it would fit in my car.

We were quite lucky as the standard dimensions fitted perfectly into the spaces, so there were no awkward gaps.

I have several Pax units, all of them with the mirror doors, both hinged and sliding. Going for 7 years old now. Can't fault them except for one thing: as already pointed out, shelves tend to sag a bit when loaded, to the point the flimsy plastic supports no longer carry the shelf properly. Sorted with metal 90 degree supports screwed into the shelf and wall. Still, extremely good value for money.

I used PAX in our son's room and Howdens for our room.

I found the PAX lower height units a bit small for want I wanted but the taller unit was too big where as the tall Howdens units were a better fit height wise without any cutting down.

In terms of quality the Howden's stuff is a bit better and doesn't have as many pre-drilled holes that are left exposed after installation but they were a pain to deal with as stuff left arriving at different times.

There are a few companies online that make doors to suit the PAX system so if you don't like the Ikea doors that is another option for you.

Another trick that I have seen with the PAX units is to fit the side panels back to front so that the all of the fixing holes are hidden but I think you would need to do a lot of planning to make that work first time!

Thanks all did not expect so many replies. I am still planning it out but will probably wait till we have moved to actually order it all.

Anyone got any recommendations for an island type thing for the middle of the room?

I used these and my only suggestion would be to make sure to secure them to the wall (preferably more than the instructions suggest) and get someone to help with the construction of the carcasses in the initial stages.

They are made from chipboard which is a bit weetabix like so don’t take much stress in any direction they are not designed to. Manoeuvring them into position sometimes twists them in a way that they aren’t designed for.

All in all, 10 years on and they are still fine.

Cheers I have read that the 2.0 have been designed to be more user friendly to assemble.

I built in a 3m row of Pax about eight years ago and they were / are great. Fast forward to this year and I built in another set and the quality has dropped massively! They used to be the best thing that Ikea did - the only line that felt reasonable quality - but now they’re just like the rest of their junk.

They’re just standard Ikea ste now.

I used Pax for a dressing room and it cost a fraction of what I was looking at paying from the likes of Sharps. Obviously it cost me in terms of planning and labour though.

(Please overlook the fact I hadn't aligned all the doors in my haste to get some photos taken!)

They've been in over 10 years now and have taken a right hammering from my mechanically-unsympathetic wife but everything still looks and functions as new.

The islands are usually drawer units for walkins.

The saggy shelf issue mentioned could be easily fixed by screwing a bit of 2 x 1 timber to the long edges.
