Appliance Warranty
Discussion
Afternoon all...
Back in 2016 I bought my mother a washing machine at Curry's, not how much it was, probably £400-500.
I was round at the family home last week and picked up a phone call from a company called Domestic & General wanting to renew the warranty on mums Hotpoint Washing machine. What warranty I asked?
Well it turns out this company contacted my mum some years ago and in the interim have taken over £1200 from her providing a warranty on the washing machine. We're a family that really don't 'do' extended warranties (my McLaren aside
) - had mum called me at any point in the last two years saying it had gone wrong, I'd have gone and got a new one without even considering that it'd be under warranty. They have dogs so the washing machine gets a rough ride washing beds etc.
Mum has unfortunately got reduced mental faculty through early onset dementia, she gets confused easily and is an easy sell / pushover.
I can't be annoyed at Mum for taking out the policy, but I am annoyed at these companies targeting older people and selling them policies they really don't need.
I have complained to them, but have a letter back stating my complaint is not upheld as they write to her or email every year and she renews it.
Is this just a suck it and move on scenario, or would you take it further?

I’m assuming you don’t have LPA for your Mum ?
As the policy / warranty has been in force for say 6 years ( the annual premium of £200 sounds on the high side though ) and they have written each year and she has “ accepted “ each year I think you will struggle to get anywhere.
As you have already complained and got their answer I guess the next thing to do would be write to the ombudsman but whilst I totally understand where you are coming from I think I would just move on.
Maybe make a note of the renewal date so you can remind your mum not to renew then.

I suspect they phone every year and get a renewal authorisation over the phone... as that's the call I answered, and Mum hasn't seen anything in the post from them - and she keeps all post, never throws anything away.
I've cancelled the policy in no uncertain terms - so hopefully it won't arise again. I wouldn't put it past them selling her details to another company though.
D&G must give a referrer fee to these outlets.
I’ve bought appliances from several sources AO, Currys etc and every time there follows a phone call from D&G for extended warranty even though I’ve never specifically asked for it Not withstanding the manufacturers at least 1yr warranty why would anybody take out a D&G warranty on white good that often cost less than £300 when usually there’s additional cost/excess applied? If it breaks after the manufacturer warranty expires I just buy another.
Sadly items these days are just disposable and not cost effective to repair.

I’ve had letters from D&G 12 months after buying something new (that I registered with the manufacturer for the first year warranty.). I’ve just ignored them and the other 3 reminders they always send
They appear to be the warranty company of choice for loads of manufacturers of domestic appliances.
Never had a phone call though.

D&G are well known phone bandits, and unfortunately the older people get, generally they get more risk averse and buy warranties. An uncle of mine had warranties on everything, despite having ample funds to replace stuff if needed.
I like the idea of claiming, get a new appliance then kick them into touch.
