Yesterday I was in one of the "Savers" stores buying a few bits and pieces.

There was a queue of about six people in front of me, every time they put their items on the counter the young girl said "Would you like some chocolate, we've got them on special offer?", or "Would you like some batteries, they are on a special?

By the time it was my turn I was really wound up and thought if this silly cow says anything I'll blow a gasket.

I arrived at the till and put down a toothbrush....£1.00.

She points to an electric toothbrush and says, "Why not leave that and buy an electric one for £24.99?"

I said "No thank you", so then she proceeds "We've got a special offer on this pack of ten spare brushes for an electric toothbrush, only £6.00"

I said "What would I want those for when I haven't got an electric toothbrush?"

She looked at me with a bemused expression.

I picked up my purchases a bade an hasty retreat.

ffs!

The till girl was just doing her job. Your issue is with the management who make their staff do things like this.

Eggsactly this. You need to direct your energies at the management, who will automatically hide.

To a degree. But 'staff' are still actual people and anyone with half a brain can tell if they're annoying people. There must be some discretion. If I went through this rigmarole and was pestered like this every week I'd shop elsewhere.

Exactly this, how soul destroying to be forced to push a product on people that you know 99% of people don't want.

Then imagine when customer numbers drop because of irritating upselling how devastated you'd be.

They may be actual people, but it's not their choice. If it was, you can bet they wouldn't bother. If you get this every week and it is making you want to shop elsewhere, tell the manager. If enough people do this, it will stop.

As a till operator? Unlikely.

This.

It's like supermarkets that won't let you buy alcohol if you hve a child with you... like anyone who intends to supply alcohol to a child won't find a way to do it anyway. I can't help thinking the world would be a happier place if managers who make these silly rules could be given a good, hard slap across the back of the head.

Post Office are a classic for this, I pay to post a parcel and then the person behind the counter asks if I have considered funeral insurance.

Try finding the manager of a Shell garage. I did eventually, took a while. Nothing he could do he said. I got my petrol from Tesco for a few years after that.

This is to assist with providing evidence around fuel thefts (bilkings) whereby the onus is pushed back on the consumer that they were given the opportunity to conform that there was no fuel bought and therefore if fuel is stolen then a defence cannot be raised that they forgot to mention that they had also bought fuel

I recall, at one point, whenever I went in a bank I had to stare at the person behind the counter and bark out "I DO NOT WANT A CREDIT CARD" before starting whatever business I was actually in there for.

This is a tiny, inconsequential part of your day.

How about you take a breath, relax, treat is as the irrelevance that it is, let the poor woman do as she's been instructed, reply with good grace and then go about your business?

You'd feel a lot better for it. As will she.

I find WHSmith are the worst for this. Upsell & a money off voucher thrust into your hand for something you'll never buy, evidenced by the lazy f*ckers who immediately exit the store & deposit said voucher straight onto the floor outside!
