Maserati 3200 Assetto Corsa
Discussion
I popped in here a couple of months ago beginning a search for a 3200. After some research, I have decided that a red Assetto Corsa is the one I need to have.
There is one for sale at Imperial Cars (Birmingham-ish), which is also on Ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4575809369&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1
The description looks good, but does anyone know this car, or can vouch for its authenticity/pukkaness/etc?
Cheers

I didn't think 60K miles was much. Mind you, my integrale has done 208,000Km.
If 60 is a lot, what worn parts might I need to be wary of or insist are changed before buying?
Do you know of any other red Assetto Corsas for sale at the moment? Autotrader and IXM seem to be devoid of them. Not that they are as common as muck of course!

Not saying that a 60k car will be bad - just that in comparison to the rest of the filed it's long in the tooth.
Not to say the car is bad or anything - it's probably in good nick if it's got all the stamps on board as the owner has obviously used it regularly.
Lets be clear - I'm not trying to put anyone off - I love these cars and my 2 years with one I will always remeber with great affection, but they do ahve the odd issue despite being reliable, and being an exotic they cost a lot to fix. Usually more than a Ferrari in my experience!
Be on the look out for the following and you won't go far wrong...
a) parts costs for wear and tear (get it inspected by a good specialist - an absolute must).
Clutch ain't cheap to do and if it's not been done yet it's almost certainly on the way out. ~Likewise check the tyres (600 minimum a set),
Condition of the paint (respray not cheap) and at 60k miles it's likely to be quite chipped.
Electronics - constant niggles with check engine lights etc - if these come on in the test drive it may not be serious but you should have the lambda sensors checked by a specialist before buying - they cost around a grand to do...
Air Con - pumps go pop occasionally and pipes crack. A total fix up for a leaking air con system can cost well over 2k from a specialist...
b) the price. don't want to piss on anyones bonfire here, but 25k for the leggiest of assettos is a bit rich. Yoiu could pick up an excellent 25k mile car for that privately.
c) check it's still under some kind of decent maserati / trident warranty. If it's not you're much better off buying privately a car wiht a warranty than from a dealer without....

That's very helpful, thanks. I may pop along there as I'm in the area later in the week, and give it a once-over.
Going by what you're saying, it's likely this is a bit tired, so "caveat emptor" and all that.
Regarding "good specialists": are there any trustworthy ones around Guildford? Or is Maranello the only one about?

Search this board - there are a whole bunch of Ferrari / MAserati / Lambo specialists in Surrey generally.
From my own experience I would always go to an independent for a check over (it's cheaper!).
Verdis (Hayes MIDDX)
Talacrest (Egham) would be the ones I'd use though there are plenty of others all trustworthy on this score.
I wouldn't say the car is necessarily tired, just that ultimately for similar money that you could get a car that hasn't been used as much which in terms of resale value (if you're going to put miles on it) will probably be easier. I would imagine selling a 3200 in 3 years time with 80k+ on it would not be the work of an instant when the majority of 3200s will be barely pushing 50k.
Great cars though

Even on an auto?
If the car has a full service history, checks out with a specialist and above all "feels" good through your árse and hands, then IMO there's no issue with a 60K 3200GT. Hell, if anything it means the car's been used, rather than been a driveway trinket like many of the 12K, 2 y/o ones you see.

Hi,

Also check here on ebay:

75 of these actual models were made so kind of rare.
Ensure you have some free cash available and should you get it you will love it. Excellent cars and great fun however just bear in mind that red 3200s are the least popular - many dealers told me that. The red hides the boomerang brake lights!
Most of the dealers are fine so its more of a personal choice really.
Good luck in getting one. If you get one do let us all know

I don't know a great deal about these cars in particular, but for some reason I'm always wary of seeing a single 'prestige' car for sale on the same forecourt as dozens of shopping cars.
Looking at these guy's website, they only have the 3200 and an Evo 8, the rest are all Clio, Picasso, 'normal' type of cars.
Would that bother anyone else?

Why the hell would they want to sell a "race setup" with an auto? It's bonkers! The search continues...

Hmmm... black looks nice as well! Anyone know this car perchance?

That did cross my mind. I.E. it would need the serious attention of a specialist, but that's not to say it's a bad 'un, just that more caution would need to be exercised.
Thanks all!
I'm toying with the idea of selling mine, now that the oil's ran out, it's the right spec for me (manual in nero met. black), and would only consider it going to a good home... I paid 36k 20 months ago, steering recall and service to be completed in October... it was also a footballer's ride as originally bought by an England player (hope that doesn't put you all off)

Far from it! There's bound to be a kilo or so of Charlie lost down the back seats; it'd certainly help cover the running costs of the car!
If the Maser about which this thread is about, is on sale at an "Honest Johns Quality Used Cars" style outlet, surrounding by shopping wagons and "Good little runners, mate", run a mile. And then another just to make sure. The thought of such a guy selling a 3200 fills me with dread; you think they know the first thing about these cars? And as for warranty...heh, good one...
