Why would you not be able to?

Assume you're confident the recipient is legit?

There may be two issues:
1) Maximum you can transfer (usually £25k ?)
2) anti-money laundering/embezzlement protection

With regards the latter, when I had a new roof (multiple rooves) re-tiled, the bank phoned me up after I tried to pay half the amount as a deposit. They questioned, whether someone had sold me the work on a doorstep, was I coerced, and similar questions. Once the initial (50%) payment was made, then paying the final amount later on was OK.

Try WISE for transferring money abroad. I have sent money to Japan that way, you get a good exchange and fee rate.
