Last year my son insured his motorbike and added his Dad as a named driver. His Dad had an accident in April 21 which my son declared. He’s now renewing his policy with the same company but not adding his Dad and they’ve told him he has to declare his Dad’s accident if he wants to keep his no claims bonus as it was earned by having his dad on the policy. This doesn’t sound right to me. Is this normal?

Thanks!

What's the exact wording of the question they are asking? If its have you had any accidents, claims or convictions, you're probably better off moving insurance comapnies. If its Have you or any named drivers etc, bang to rights.

Either way, you almost certainly have to declare it with this insurance company since they have told you to, and know all about it.

He's not adding any named drivers, but they still want him to declare his dad's accident.

The only person on the policy will be my son so it doesn't make sense to me to declare an accident for someone who isn't going to be on the policy

Did the dad have the accident on the son's bike, and/or was a claim made on the son's policy?

If yes, then the accident will need to be declared by the son for the next 3-5 years, even if the dad is no longer a named driver on the policy.

No my husband had the accident in his work van back in April 21 and claimed on his own insurance.

My son added his dad as named driver last year and declared the accident as you're supposed to do.

This year son is renewing without any named drivers but insurance say he can only apply the NCB if he declares his dad's accident, because it was earned with his dad on the policy last year...

If he's not going to be on our son's policy, it doesn't make sense to have to declare someone elses accident

That sounds like utter garbage! Go elsewhere for insurance.

Yep, that's what I thought but they spent an hour on the phone to insurance yesterday and the company wouldn't budge

The insurance company must be wrong, as it makes no sense to link the dad's unrelated accident to the son's policy, if the dad is no longer a named driver.

Furthermore, trying to link the son's no claims discount to the dad makes even less sense.

Are we 100% it was your son's policy with dad as named driver / rider and not dad's policy with son as named driver / rider

just a thought to put out there

It makes no sense at all! I'm trying to get through to them now to clarify using the NCB

Are you talking to the insurance company or insurance intermediary/broker?

Do you already have the proof of no claims? Is the policy lapsed yet? Just get the proof and use it elsewhere. The dads accident is an utter irrelevance and need not be mentioned.
