996TT to a 996 GT2 ?
Discussion
Yup done it, love it, totally different car to the Turbo, whatever people will tell you... Much faster, much better balanced, but harsh and hard for everyday use compaired to the Turbo and you do need to keep you whits about you as it will bite if treated badly.
There was another long thread about this a few months ago.... I did look but could see it... anyone who can search properly care to help??

I did it too (via several other cars. It's much faster, much more scarey, much more exclusive, much harsher, much much much less forgiving...and much more of a bargain.
With respect to previous post who said it's fast in a straight line but that's about it, I think driver skill and confidence has a lot more to do with that with this car than most others. In other words, for a skilled driver it will be almost unbeatably fast in most situations. Not suggesting I have that skill (I don't) just from observation of those that do. It's not a car that inspires confidence in the timid.

So would a 996TT modified to 500bhp address the speed issue as feedback so far is that its just faster and a bit more exclusive, whilst the negatives are its less forgiving and not really a day to day car.
I would imagine a 996TT is faster point to point accross country due to the 4WD, both in the hands of OK drivers.
I would think a modified TT would be as quick as a GT2 and quicker A-B ?

I went from a TT to a GT3RS to the GT2..... initially I found the GT2 a handful and thought it didn't corner worth a dam until a mate who is also a professional GT driver took me out and explained how the car works. It's all down to understand what the trick diff is doing and how it helps or hinders you round a corner.
End result was he drives GT3RSR's and stated the GT2 is definately a faster but much more challenging car to drive and if you are after fun every so often the GT3RS is probably better if you want the ultimate 911 challenge go for the GT2.
As for performance, a 550hp TT is about the same performance as an out of the box GT2, the weight difference and the power loss though the four wheel drive will even things out. However on a track the GT2 will still be quicker due to better balance (once you understand the weirdness of the diff). Country road, TT will eat a GT2 standard or modified, just depends on the type of thrill you are looking for really.

I have a modified 996TT with a GT2 body kit. The confidence issue is a big one. The TT inspires confidence while you need to be a top driver to get the most out of a GT2.
I have been behind a number of GT2's on track days and found that because of my confidence in the TT I have managed to be faster. However a top driver in a GT2 will be faster. Unless you are a very good driver a modified TT will be faster in most situations.

except in the wet? I would suggest 95% of people would be faster in a TT in wet conditions which, lets face it, is quite common in the UK.
I remember talking to Joe Macari (races Ferraris so presumably can drive a bit) about GT2s and he said even he found them a bit scary even on a track

When I decided to get the RS instead of a GT2, I did so because the consensus seemed to be that the GT2 is extremely hard to exploit and with cars of this performance, the penalty for failure can be enormous.
I had several ex-GT2 owners tell me they thought it was too much. Awesome bit of kit, but if you need to be a lemans winner to use it, I decided it was not something I needed
I never did get to drive one though, so maybe I made the wrong choice. I suspect not though as even the kindest reviews have said it can be a handful.
Damon Hill gave one a really positive review in the Times or Telegraph though.

I went for a GT3 instead of a GT2 for similar reasons to the ones alredy stated here... i.e the GT2's chassis "appears" to be flawed and unable to cope with the transition from off-boost to on-boost. Many would argue that this is down to the driver more than the chassis and I won't argue... The way the GT3 looks, the sound of that NA engine, and what it is (an actual racecar) sealed it for me.
However the 996TT is a completely different car to either GT3/GT2.
Basically, it's a cruiser.....albeit a crushingly competant one. The "scary-ness" of the GT2 is a secondary consideration to one of deciding whether you want an everyday car or an out-n-out performance tool/track day car.
If you want the latter, then simply dial-in how a good a driver you think you are
and select GT3 or GT2.

As awesome as the GT2 is in a straight line, the chassis feels blunt and very uncommunicative compared to the GT3.
I'm sure you could improve it dramatically by playing around with the setup, but so few were made there weren't enough people bothered to experiment and hence were no accepted settings for what worked.

I've done two mods to my GT2 to transform it, first is to put a sports exhaust with race cats, brings the power up nicely and reduces some of the surge you get as standard making the car easier to balance. Secondly spent time playing with the suspension setup to the point that now it feels much more like a GT3, good steering feel (absent on standard setup), more balanced and no understeer.
With these mods I love the car now, but would agree as the car comes out of the box it is not an inspiring drive, more of a wild dragster!

Speedyellow, could you elaborate on the workings of the diff that your friend explained to you.... be very interested to hear more about this and how it relates to how we should drive the cars.

Where did you get the GT2 kit put on your TT? or perhaps it was done when you got the car?
I am thinking of getting a GT2 front & rear bumper fitted to my TT, but cost is quite eye watering !
Ro.
The GT2 kit was already on the car when I bought it thankfully. Looking at an old invoice it seems to have been done by GWR (Milton Keynes )who specialise in Race and Track day support. Cost seems to be £6800. Contact number is 0794 661 7232.
Good Luck !

I think you are better to leave it as it is otherwise its dead money. Still its your car mate - personally I would think about a Tubi instead as you are always saying you wish it sounded better!
I have just been out in mine and wonder why I keep thinking about a 360 as really there is no better car than a 911 in my opinion.
Regarding a GT2 - I must say I love the idea of getting one but it scares me as my TT has saved me before when I got carried away where as the GT2 would have killed me. Chris Harris from Autocar bought one and he said he loved it. Chris if you reading this then feel free to jump in.
Cheers

I agree that a great driver would be quicker in a 996GT2 but most of us would be quicker in a 996tt. I think that jon luik has the best of both worlds - the better looks of the GT2, increased power, 4WD, PSM. I'm planning to go down the same route starting with a GT2 front bumper. I've seen quotes much less than the £6800 that was spent on Jon's car. a bit of shopping around should get it done for approx £2500.
