Hmm thats how my GT3 read just after I picked it up from an OPC oil change. I thought they'd short changed me. Why is it calibrated one notch below when at the correct temp to take the reading given the engine has to be running on GT3s anyway due to the sump.

I'm not sure that I understand your question.
If it is, Why should the target reading be one notch below top?, I think the answer is:
That way you can monitor it and if you overfilled a bit it would edge up to the top level. If you were aiming for the absolute top level and overfilled, there's more of a risk that, without knowing it, you would have gone substantially over max, which as you know could cause a messy problem.
