First off sorry Ted for reposting this photo that ive already put on another PH Forum,i posted the same photo on an American forum and its causing a bit of a stir because i am using the "Stars & Stripes" as a cover for my engine while ive been rebuilding it.

I honestly didnt give it a second thought until someone pointed it out that it was disrespectful, then others made the same point although there are also others that have given an opposite opinion, rather than offend i have taken the flag off now but ime just curious to your opinions especially the american posters, off to work now

Erm... Its an American engine, and you were merely paying homage to the fact?

Its not as if its dirty and oily if you had been cleaning your hands on it - that i could understand being called disrespectful.

Is it disrespectful if it's upsidedown?

The American Flag is never supposed to be used in such a manner
As i am sure you all know Chevy had originally intended to use an American Flag as one of the flags in the crossed flag Corvette symbol and changed it because it was a violation of the rules regarding flag etiquette Also when Kid Rock wore one as a pancho at the 2004 Super Bowl halftime it was a violation of section 8d "The flag should never be used as wearing apparel" He was however overshadowed by later events (wardrobe malfunction)I had a poster of Raquel Welch wearing a bathing suit thatwas a flag when I was a kid That was wrong too

My sister got asked to help a little old lady as she has an England badge on her car. The poor woman thought it was a first aid badge.

Holier than thou idiot It would've been acceptable to him if it had been a British/Swedish/Eritrean flag, but you can't dare touch the Stars and Stripes - pathetic really. IIRC there was an episode of Futurama lampooning this attitude to THE flag.

So Kid Rock can't wear one as a 'pancho'(I presume he means 'poncho' i.e. wearing it around his shoulders) but its ok for US track and field athletes to do it when they win the World Champs

Quoting rules.... What a prig. Unfortunately he is quite typical of the introverted, overly patriotic idiots around where I live. Hence why on St Georges Day, the Cross will be flying loud and proud from Casa Angleterre. If you can't beat them...

Plus if he thinks a young Raquel Welch in a bikini is wrong, he's even more of a moron

We over here wear our flags proudly.

I dont see anything wrong with it, I mean, its not a religion is it? I remember there was a nude model in one of the tabloids wearing a cross round her neck and the church threw up a big fuss about it.

Point being, you'll always piss someone off, without even knowing you're doing it, and probably in some places end up dead cos of it.

Its a beautiful world we live in.

I can only imagine the kind of emails Ted must be getting from some pistonheaders demanding topics to be pulled down etc, due to politcal correctness and faiths and cultures.... sad really.

And an old girlfriend of mine asked why there were so many Italian flags at a U2 concert in Paris

Highway Star's misguided post aside, the answer is, yes, it is disrespectful, but no-one is slagging you for it, because A) you didn't know and B) you did intend it as an homage.

Your usage is indeed inappropriate, but again, I only point out to correct it, as I know you certainly meant no harm by it.

Beautiful engine by the way.

As for highwaystar, I read the quote and don't see how you get off slagging that guy. He simply answered the question by pointing to a documented authority. You put a helluva lot of words into that guy's mouth.

I don’t think its disrespectful, if you had abused it by soiling it etc I could understand. You are merely promoting a piece of American engineering. Was it disrespectful of Rover or Mini to use flags?

It's a piece of material stuck to a flagpole. Get over it. It would be a little less ironic idf many Americans knew there was a country outside the US and didn't heap scorn on countries like France and Canada. Criticism of a lack of respect for other cultures is ironic when they think Scotland is part of England. This is, of course, a gross generalisation but like I say, it's just a piece of material.

But the mere fact there are regulations says rather a lot.

If I were building a kick arse Rover V8 block, I would have no issue wrapping it in a UK flag.

Union Jack is also part of Australian flag etc how disrespectful is that?

No idea how much trouble C5RagTop will get into then for not only having the Stars & Stripes in tatters on his bonnet, but it is also incorrect as it is missing some stars and also some stripes!
