Near to home is a T junction. Stanton Lane and Hinckley Road. Nothing special, no hazards or obstructed views.

But 7 or 8 times a year this happens. Occasionally, a passing motorist gets T boned, happily without serious injury so far.

Usual excuse is didn't notice the junction. Muppets.

Perhaps they are all unobservant muppets. Or perhaps the road signage is poor/insufficient.

It is now biglaugh.

I would go with your first statement, if you have to rely on signs to see a junction, well, specsavers

If this is where you mean, then the road appears to be turning to the right, when is actually a T junction. And there is no warning sign until you are on top of it.
Plus being a muppet I suppose, but road design is supposed to protect us from muppetry.

I assume this is the junction you are talking about?

Stupid is as stupid does.

We have a cross roads close by, some sort of incident happens regular as clockwork, 9 times out of 10 needing Police to attend.

Further down the road another t-junction, vehicles regularly buried in the hedge opposite covered in Police aware tape.

If it’s that regular, then you have to question the road layout or signage. The white paint has worn away a lot. The 50 sign before the junction would indicate to many, a change in speed only, but not a junction. I would say replace that sign with an advanced give way sign.

There is a signpost about 100m back from the junction which is just a post, and has no sign on it - presumably this should be warning of the upcoming give-way junction. Shortly afterwards is a 50mph sign. In the absence of a sign for the junction, and only a slight reduction in speed limit, they probably get to within meters of the junction before they realise it’s not just a kink in the road that’s taken away the sight of the tarmac, but a much more serious situation.

Yes, of course they should be reading the road better, but people screw up, and that’s why warning signs are normally present.

Indeed. If you reverse up the road a bit on Streetmap it does look like a right hand bend due to the painted triange at the junction.

Do the crashes happen in the dark when people can't see the hedge opposite the junction?

Just repainting the centre line so it is straight should fix it.

The Council have upgraded the signage, etc but the house whose garden collects the vehicles has a metal fence plus barriers to protect the garden, not really enough for cars hooting at 60mph though. The main road is 50mph limit with 60mph one side and 30mph the other.

I think he gets bulk discount on garden sheds.

The way the right hand kerb slants out does make it look like a right hand bend rather than a junction, not long after a left hander, signs unlit, paint worn, no advanced signage, not excusing poor driving but the road could be a lot better.

Put a scarecrow in a hi viz in the hedge. Sometimes villages do that to slow folk down and it works.

I can see clearly why these accidents are happening. The road looks to be an NSL, and if you are rounding the bend at 60, then it only becomes clear there's a junction ahead when it's too late to begin slowing down. For some reason there's no advance warning.

At this point, you can't see the junction ahead, yet it's already too late to begin slowing for many people who don't have the best reactions and for those who are afraid to press the brake pedal firmly:

https://www.google.com/maps/@52.5398873,-1.2962289...

At night, things will be even worse. The council should install some advance warning signs so that you know there's a junction coming up before you can see it. And there should be a black and white chequerboard pattern on the far side of the T-junction so make it clear even in the dark where the junction is.

Yes, a good driver knows that they should be able to stop in the distance they can see to be clear. But we know that the road is filled with morons who are not good drivers. Since we know that, we need to give them advance warning of the junction. You can't easily improve the standard of driving, but you can make the roads much safer without having to impose silly speed limits. Do that and I bet the number of accidents will drop massively. Poor road signage.

Parking in a hedge opposite a T junction is quite popular around here either after a sunny day in someone's garden pub or after a lock-in at the weekend. Especially close to more affordable housing and it's always the same sort of car. Over the last 30 years they've staggered most cross roads in an attempt to get rural stoners and cider fans to stop at them.

I know the road. It is not even a straight road and requires some degree of concentration to actually drive down before reaching that junction...i.e you have to turn the wheel a few times prior to reaching the junction, so no excuse for being distracted as you zone out.

Can't give an explanation other than terrible drivers.

ETA...yes it is a NSL road, but if you are unaware of the road and doing 60+ round this corner prior to the junction, you are asking for trouble.

Looking on Streetview, currently there is no advanced warning of the junction, just a speed limit reduction to 50mph.

If you look at the Streetview 2011 image for the same road, there used to be a "Give Way ahead" sign as some type of advanced warning that it was a junction coming up. I'm not sure the council have been entirely successful in "upgrading" the signage?

Excellent research, some great upgrade work done there, the post remains in place and the painted SLOW (barely visible) instead. The hedges also look far better presented in 2011!

Even more ridiculous when you consider you can purchase a set of replacement signs for £50!!

Some council cock-up that, not replacing the advanced sign!
