I was driving a car owned by a friend with his permission, but am driving third party on my own car insurance, and had a minor scrape. I maintain I was not at fault and have no claim to make so am I stiill aobliged to notify my insurance company or does my friend have to nottify his insurance company.

You were driving so you go through your insurance.

If you were uninsured or took the car without the owners consent he could make a claim on his own policy.

Does he count as a 3rd party or will you be paying for the repair is a better question.

If you are not making a claim...?

I guess it depends on the scale maybe, you are not going to report a carpark trolley ding, but if you take out a bus stop it might be hard to avoid them finding out? I dont know the law.

Certainly when I stonked it into a telegraph pole the police and insurance where informed, but when I hit a private fence and decided to sell the car rather than fix it up they didnt.

See also if its another car you hit.

What does "minor scrape" mean in this case? Is it my definition meaning something like a bumper scuff on a wall or similar, or was this actually a slow speed crash between two cars?

If there is another car involved, you will need to inform your insurance. Even if you don't claim (because you can't as it's third party only), the other driver might. If you don't it will mark as an incident on your friend's policy.

As the car isn't covered for you to drive on your friend's insurance policy, there's no need to inform them as it's nothing to do with them as they weren't covering the car at the time - it would be similar to if a garage crashed your car whilst it was in their car.

If it wasn't your fault are you claiming of the other party for the damage to your friends car?

Or how are you fixing your friend's car? All assuming there is damage to your friends car to be repaired.

yes you have to notify your insurer whether or not you claim

They tell you to:

NOTIFY US OF ANY ACCISENTS, CLAIMS OR CONVICTIONS

But I'm guessing you are well aware of that

Did you have a scrape with another car?

I am assuming you mean YOU are not making a claim, the other driver may do so, and it will be against your insurance.

If you did no damage scraping an object other than a car, and are not making a claim, then no, pay to get it fixed yourself.

If another driver makes a claim, you need to weigh up if it is better for you to pay it, it will be classed as non fault accident if you do so, you keep your NCB.

If there is another party involved you will need to notify your insurer because these things have a habit of getting back to them through 3rd parties and you don’t want to be caught out.

If you have scraped a wall or similar you can probably get away with not notifying your insurer but then that would suggest it was your fault as the driver.
