New MST Evo-X unveiled at PH Annual Service
Legendary X-Pack Escorts revived with mega MST
Back in the day, the way to make an Escort RS2000 even more desirable was to pick up a Ford Series-X catalogue in one hand and your chequebook (remember those?!) in the other, then get busy with both. There wasn’t much that couldn’t be improved, but it was the box-arched bodykits that became the standout feature of the Series-X collection, which became colloquially known as the X-Pack. A fast Escort was cool, but an X-Packed fast Escort was off the chain.
It’s those classic Fords that MST is aiming to evoke with this, the Evo-X, which debuted at the PH Annual Service on Saturday. Like an X-Pack Escort but more so, it takes MST’s Mk2 and cranks everything to 11 - increased power, better suspension, more tech and so on. Plus, of course, the iconic look, complete with droop snoot and monster arches.
Perhaps the most interesting part of the Evo-X is what can’t be seen, as this MST Mk2 will feature independent rear suspension. Those with exceptional Escort and rallying knowledge will know this isn’t the first time a Mk2 has been converted from its live axle rear end, as Colin McRae commissioned a very special Ford in the 2000s - his last rally car, in fact - with independent rear suspension. This MST-X will use a version of the setup that he co-developed, which is pretty cool.
The rest of the parts sound suitably serious. That new rear end (as well as the front) will feature Reiger three-way adjustable dampers and what MST is calling WRC-spec alloy hubs, with the option of Tractive electronic suspension. Nothing but the best for an Evo-X, clearly. Tractive is also supplying the six-speed sequential gearbox, with traditionalists still able to plump for a manual. AP Racing brakes are standard, with six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers (plus adjustable bias), and it’ll come with 17-inch wheels and Michelin Cup tyres.
The really exciting bit, however, is under the bonnet, with a choice of MST’s most powerful engines. There’s a 2.5 Duratec rated at 280hp, which will be nice, but also a 2.8-litre Millington Diamond, with its latest throttle bodies and more than 360hp. Probably that’s the Evo-X engine to have. Especially as it’s going to come in an even better Mk2. MST already offers Millingtons in its other builds, but the Evo-X will benefit from additional chassis and body strengthening, a carbon rear diffuser and, of course, those mind-blowing arches - its own design, no less. Quite the thing to have registered as a brand new car with the DVLA come next year. The order books are open now.
As with previous MST cars, customers will be offered plenty of customisation options. They won’t all look like this Evo-X (though we can well see why some might copy it), with paint, seats, steering wheel and upholstery all on the changeable list. The spirit of the Series-X catalogue is back, then, and better than ever.

I guess in MST’s defence, they have to use all new parts for these cars, so they may be limited in what is available and works.

Back in 78 my potential RS2000 ownership never happened when (my now ex) SHMBO put her foot down with a firm hand. Ended up with the 1600Ghia instead which to be fair gave us nearly 80,000 reliable miles.
I can't imagine wanting to own something so antiquated now.
