Equipment advice?
Discussion
I know..... another thread.
Anyway it's not really a Nikon/Canon thing.
My car is up for sale at the minute, I'm spending too much time at work. Anyway, funds should be freed up and looking through the archives has got me thinking about upgrading my ickle Ixus400. It's got a dirty spot on it somewhere anyway, shows up in the piccies.
Right, back on track. Assuming I have approx £1000 that I'm happy to play with I was thinking along these lines.
350D body
lenses (one multi use or two? suggestions)
software to play with.
Now, there seems to be a number of older PS CD's on ebay with promises that it is good for the upgrades. If thats the case then I can get the CS2 upgrade for $150 (my computer goes through an American network in the office). Is this worth it, seeing as that way wouldn't be much more than getting elements.
Lenses, any suggestions. I plan to be taking some sports pictures and the usual landscape/travel type stuff. I would prefer IS (got shakey hands!!!)
No arguments about D70/350D. I will go to a shop and cop a feel before decision time. I'm just using the Canon as an example as I've always used Canon in the past.
My SLR knowledge is low but I did take and develop B&W in the past so have a little idea about what you are talking about. It's a bit confusing sometimes though after so long.
Cheers
Andy

I have no idea what Software Nikon supply, but Canon ship PS Elements 3 with bodies thee days. Is there really any need for the full version?
With a grand to spend you're going to be fairly limited on lenses once you've bought the the camera body.
One option would be something like this from DigitalRev (HongKong) Click for package
That would leave you a bit of spare cash for other toys...or you could get a Body & Kit lens package from them and choose your other lens to suit

Didn't realise that. I wouldn't have thought I would need the full version but was just thinking that for only a few pounds more you might as well. If Elements comes with the camera then fair enough.
Lens wise, I was thinking about body only plus other lens as the general belief seems to be that the kit 18-55 lens is pretty poor.
Not in my experience.
My kit lens is very respectable. Alot of kits lenses are compared to the top of the range Canon L series, which are a £1000 a go, or a Canon IS USM which are £2000 a go.
Sure you can put a lens to test through a machine that will give you wonderfull graphs and highlight the defects, but you not going to do that. Your going to take photographs, process them, then print them.
If you bought a kit lens, and look at the printed result, would the picture be any better? I've used L series and IS, and in real world there's not much in it, with the exception of the IS lens, which gives you 2-3 more stops.
Don't believe the hype.

In very general terms, for lenses I'd say you want two lenses that cover wide angle to decent telephoto. In Nikon-land that would be the 18-70mm and 70-300mm.
Also allow for a spare battery, 1Gb CF card (Lexar or SanDisk, not Happy Shopper) and good flashgun.
Again speaking from the Nikon view, that's roughly:
D70 + 18-70mm lens £600
70-300mm lens (G model to start with) £100
Memory £70
Spare battery (eBay) £10
SB600 flash £200
Batteries/charger for above £20
Total: £1,000

I got a canon 350D package and all the bits for £1000, this included the Camera/18-55/55-200/Battery Grip package, and a spare battery for the grip, 4GB flash card, skylight filters for the lenses and a case. This was from Ask on TCR.
Skylight filters??? That's for film...
They should have given you UV(0) filters if at all. In reality the only filter you need is Circular Polarisers...

Is this the Canon kit? If so see 01792.org

Had a look but I'm still thinking something like the 17-85 IS USM would be a better bet. There's a few decent looking deals on it just now (coming from abroad). The body was advertised at £520 in the UK which seems like an absolute steal at the moment.

True, but I'm not sure it makes any difference in reality. A Skylight is almost unnoticeably pink, but I imagine this would be removed in the white balance.
The real point of Skylight/UV IMHO is for protection, not for any visual difference it makes.

I didn't quite mean like that. I meant to do with kit.
